Answering a Prompt Objective: Understand how to analyze a prompt and prepare a response for an argumentative essay
The Prompt Is nonviolence an effective means of bringing about change? Using your readings from this unit, to include the WebQuest, Freedom Walkers, Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech, and the Malcolm X reading in ebackpack, consider: Success or failure of historical events that used nonviolence Effect on participants (what it takes to be non- violent) What might happen if violence was used instead of nonviolence
The Prompt When, if ever, do citizens have the responsibility to disobey laws? Using your readings from this unit, to include the WebQuest, Freedom Walkers, Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech, and the Henry David Thoreau reading in ebackpack, consider: What is a citizen’s obligation if a law is immoral? What makes a law immoral? What are the consequences of not obeying the law or obeying the law? If a citizen disobeys a law that he or she considers immoral, should they suffer the punishment?
Beginning Determine your position: for or against (claim) Identify your evidence (supporting evidence) – Include at least two pieces of evidence. – Use MLA citations. Draft your introduction on scratch paper (claim). Consider the opposing argument (counter-claim) Outline your essay on scratch paper, including the conclusion. – Include at least two pieces of evidence. – Use MLA citations.
Next: Draft your essay (rough), using either paper or iPad, whichever is most comfortable for you. Review your draft against the prompt. Did you include something for each “consider” bullet? Read your essay like a stranger. Would someone unfamiliar with the class understand your points? Make revisions as necessary.
Finally: Type the essay into the ipad making any changes you noted on your rough draft. Proof for typos if you have time. Submit.
