4 MLA Citation Workshop Citing resources in MLA format Modern Language Association format is used by English and Humanities students Two basic features of MLA style In the text of your paper Include the author or title and page citation for each source At the end of your paper Create list on a new page titled “Works Cited.” Include all sources used in your paper Alphabetized by author’s last name or title if author is unknown Sample MLA-formatted paper. 5 MLA Citation Workshop In-Text Citation: Printed Material 1 Author named in Text Ex: One driver, Peter Cohen, says that after he was rear- ended, the guilty party emerged from his vehicle still talking on the phone (127). Author named in Parentheses Ex: Most states do not keep adequate records on the number of times cell phones are a factor in accidents; as of December 2000, only ten states were trying to keep such records (Sundeen 2).

14 MLA Citation Workshop Citation Creators & Other Helpful Resources 1 Print and Online Guidelines for Citations Under “Help with Citations” on the library’s home page there are links to several online citation tools. One of those links is to:home page NoodleTools The Tam District libraries have a subscription to NoodleTools, a web site which allows for the creation of very sophisticated citations and notes. This site is used by many colleges and universities. NoodleTools

15 MLA Citation Workshop Citation Creators & Other Helpful Resources 2 Database Citation Creators Many subscription databases have tools to help with making proper citations in various formats. MS Word 2007 “References” tab allows for the creation of citations and bibliographies/works cited lists.
