Careless Christians Once We Become Christians A serious commitment, Luke 14:27-33. – It’s a lifelong commitment, 1Corinthians 15:1-2, “Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.”

More than just getting wet. – Hear, Acts 2:37, “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart…” Believing, John 3:16-17, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

Repenting, Acts 17:30-30 “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” Confessing, Romans 10:10 “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Being Baptized, 1Peter 3:21 “There is also an antitype which now saves us- baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

Zeal and excitement and the “new” begins to wear off. – Paul warns of this careless condition 1Corinithians 10:12 “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”

We Can Become Careless In Our Dealings With Our Brethren We must never lose that love for each other, – John 13:34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” True brotherly love is more than just a word we say, 1John 3:11-18. – It’s sacrificing money, time & energy. – It’s teaching, encouraging, picking them up and shaking them up as needed.

Turn the focus from inward, to outward. Otherwise it’s easy to skip over their needs, Philippians 2:3-4 “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

We Can Become Careless In Our Efforts To Teach The Gospel When was the last time you talked to a complete stranger about the Bible? – We have to get out of our comfort zone. – That’s why Jesus ate with sinners in (Matthew 9) – The world is lost and dying, 2Corinthians 3:2 “You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men;” – (Matthew 28:18-20) Go, teach, baptize…teach!

We Can Become Careless In Our Study Habits Remembering God’s commandments is essential to pleasing Him. How? – James 1:21-25, keep looking into the perfect law of liberty. Is studying for class and following along at worship enough? Acts 17:11 “These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.”

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”

We Can Become Careless In Our Worship Assembling For Worship and Study – According to Hebrews 10:24-27, assembling is not optional. Partaking of the Lord’s Supper, 1Corinthians 11:27,29 Singing – Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” – Matthew 15:8 “These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.”

Praying – Philippians 4:6 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;” Giving – Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira lost their lives and their souls because the lied to the Holy Spirits regarding giving.

2Corinthians 9:7 “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” Preaching and Teaching – 2Timothy 4:2 “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.” – Demand sound teaching be done!

We Can Become Careless In the Way We Use the Scriptures 2Timothy 4:1-5 – The Lord’s church is filled with people who are willing to misuse God’s word for an agenda. – Galatians 1:6-9 “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.”

We Can Be Careless In Our Long Term Plans Marriage – Some states, $249 lets you file for divorce – More time spent planning the wedding than the marriage (Matthew 19:3-9) Plans for the church – 1Peter 2:1-5 “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, [a] 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”a

Plans for our future – We plan retirement, kids’ college, health, disability and life insurance, now there’s even car repair insurance. – What about planning for eternity? – Paul had been planning ahead 2Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” Lay up for yourself treasures in heaven, (Matthew 6:20)

Conclusion Titus 3:8 “This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly, that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.” Are you a careless Christian? Don’t put up with carelessness in your spiritual life.
