3 What "Bad Things" Are Going on for Our Patient?  Health worries  Recriminations/guilt  Financial worries – insurance, income  Fear of criticism by friends, spouse, etc  How to meet responsibilities  Focusing on injury/pain

4 How to be empathetic  Touch, eye contact, voice, appearance, our self-confidence  Good communications posture - square and level, one on one; no sunglasses  Relieve pain, if we can  Give them something to focus on – Give them something to do; get them involved Give them something to do; get them involved Let the patient help and decide everything you can Let the patient help and decide everything you can

5 How Do We Make it Worse?  Not focusing on patient at all  Focusing on problem and not the person  Just working and not explaining  Careless words, careless radio call  Nervousness - "oh shit”  Causing additional pain  Never LIE

7 As We Work Together  Practice as you want to be on the hill  Develop habits of speech and manner
