3 At the end of this lesson the student will be able to : Objectives 1. recognize and name the ten major (penal) fouls and eight technical offenses 2. after identifying the offense, state the proper restart for that offense

4 Law 12 says: A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offenses in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force : MAJOR (PENAL) FOULS

5 DEFINITIONS: Careless: Player shows lack of attention or consideration toward opponent when challenging for the ball.

6 DEFINITIONS: Reckless: Lacking caution, rash, wild, dangerous. Syn. Headlong, hasty, irresponsible. Excessive Force: Far exceeds the necessary use of force toward an opponent.

7 MAJOR (PENAL) FOULS 1. Kicks or attempts to kick an opponent 2. Trips or attempts to trip an opponent 3. Jumps at an opponent 4. Strikes or attempts to strike an opponent 5. Charges dangerously an opponent

8 MAJOR (PENAL) FOULS 6. Pushes an opponent 7.Tackles an opponent to gain possession of the ball, making contact with the opponent before touching the ball

9 Kicking or attempting to kick an opponent MAJOR (PENAL) FOULS

10 Foul tackle from behind - may be kicking or tripping Kicking or attempting to kick an opponent MAJOR (PENAL) FOULS

11 Kicking or attempting to kick an opponent “Over the ball” tackle - may be kicking and serious foul play MAJOR (PENAL) FOULS

12 Tripping or attempting to trip an opponent MAJOR (PENAL) FOULS

13 Not a Foul! Tackler makes contact with ball first, player trips over ball or legs near ground MAJOR (PENAL) FOULS

14 Jumping at (into) an opponent MAJOR (PENAL) FOULS

15 Charging an opponent (carelessly, recklessly or using excessive force) MAJOR (PENAL) FOULS

21 ¼ Holds an opponent ½ Spits at an opponent ¾ Handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his/her own penalty area) A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following three offenses:

32 MINOR (NON-PENAL) FOULS Goalkeeper inside own penalty area: v Takes more than 6 seconds while controlling the ball with his/her hands before releasing it from his/her possession v Regains hand control prior to touch by another v Touches ball with hands after deliberately kicked by team-mate v Touches ball with hands after throw-in by team-mate

33 MINOR (NON-PENAL) FOULS Takes more than 6 seconds while controlling the ball with the hands to release it from her/his possession.

34 Touches the ball again with his/her hands after it has been released from his/her possession and has not touched any other player. MINOR FOULS (NON-PENAL)

35 MINOR (NON-PENAL) FOULS Touches ball with hands after it has been deliberately kicked by a teammate

36 MINOR (NON-PENAL) FOULS Touches ball with hands if received directly from throw-in by teammate

37 MINOR (NON-PENAL) FOULS v Plays in a dangerous manner v Impedes the progress of an opponent v Prevents goalkeeper from releasing ball from his/her hands v Commits any offense, not previously mentioned in Law 12, for which play is stopped to caution or dismiss a player

38 Playing in a dangerous manner (to an opponent) Teammate doesn’t count MINOR (NON-PENAL) FOULS

39 Playing in a dangerous manner (an opponent) Teammate doesn’t count MINOR (NON-PENAL) FOULS

40 Impeding the progress of an opponent MINOR (NON-PENAL) FOULS

41 Prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from his/her hands MINOR (NON-PENAL) FOULS

42 Restart with a Indirect Free Kick at point of infraction - by defenders within their own goal area - …kick taken from anywhere within goal area. EXCEPT… - by attackers in opponent’s goal area - …move ball to out to closest point on 6 yard line. MINOR (NON-PENAL) FOULS

43 Handling ball deliberately kicked by teammate Handling ball from throw-in by teammate Handling ball having previously released into play Holding ball more than 6 seconds TECHNICAL OFFENSES (8) Indirect Free Kick By the GK: All Players: Preventing GK from releasing ball into play Playing in a dangerous manner Impeding an opponent Any other infraction not previously mentioned
