March 8 – 14, 2009 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.
What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:
HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. G20 ministers meet amid divisions On April 2 nd (in London) the G20 group of nations will meet. They are going to try to unite and come up with a plan to rescue the world from its financial crisis. The meeting this weekend is a preliminary meeting in the UK. Divisions though are already apparent. The division is between the UK and US on the one side and Europe on the other. The UK and US want Europe to throw more money at the crisis as they have done. Europe wants the UK and US to put more regulation into the banks to stop it happening again. As the crisis worsens the pressure on governments increases. As we know when people on an individual basis lose money they do desperate things and sometimes resort to violence. The same applies to countries. The perplexity they feel will lead to division... which will lead to friction… which will lead to war. Ministers from the G20 group of rich and emerging countries are to meet in England amid growing rifts over how to tackle the worst downturn in decades. The ministers, joined by central bankers, are to discuss stimulating their economies out of recession. The US is calling for increased public spending. But some European governments stress the need to change the rules governing financial markets. They hope to agree on an agenda for the G20 summit of leaders next month. This weekend's meeting is being held in Horsham, in the English county of Sussex. The US, supported by Britain, wants other governments - especially those in continental Europe - to do more to bring their economies out of recession, says the BBC's business correspondent Mark Gregory. But European governments have indicated they are unlikely to strain their finances by agreeing to much more spending until they have seen some results from the first round of stimulus programmes already launched, says our correspondent. BBConline, March 14, 2009 EVENT COMMENT Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: BIBLE QUOTE (Luke 21:10)
Mini-summit pledges Arab unity In the final conflict one may expect it to be Arab versus Jew. This is NOT what the Bible says though. The Bible speaks of certain Arab nations not being involved in the war against Israel. Some Arab nations however may well be involved. What does the Bible say about the 4 Arab nations attending this summit? Saudi Arabia and Kuwait form the ancient territory of Sheba and Dedan. Ezekiel 38:13 makes clear these nations are NOT involved in attacking Israel with Gog (Russia). Egypt is not mentioned in Ezekiel 38 but it is in Daniel 11 which speaks of the exact same event. We are told in Daniel 11:42 that Egypt is invaded by the king of the north (Gog) and therefore we can presume as Egypt is attacked that Egypt is not part of the Gogian invasion. These 3 Arab nations are pro America generally so this fits. Syria is different. It is was once the king of the north. Syria is not pro USA and remains anti Israel. Destruction may well come on Syria before the Gogian invasion. The leaders of Saudi Arabia, Syria, Egypt and Kuwait have pledged to work together to advance the causes of their region. At the end of a mini-summit in the Saudi capital, the Arab leaders said: "The leaders consider that their meeting marks the start of a new period in their relations which will see their four countries act together in the service of Arab interests." Wednesday's statement also signalled the launch of "serious and continuous action for the benefit of Arab countries and of their agreement to embark on a unified path regarding essential issues, topped by the Palestinian question". The Riyadh summit was attended by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, Bashar al-Assad, the president of Syria, Hosni Mubarak, his Egyptian counterpart, and Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah of Kuwait. Aljazeera, March 11, 2009 EVENT COMMENT The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts. BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 17:3)
Hezbollah chief defiant on Israel Islam as a religion covers both Arab nations and NON Arab. Iran for instance is NOT an Arab nation but is Islamic. Indonesia is NOT an Arab nation but it is Islamic. Islam has two main factions. SUNNI and SHIA. Moderate Arab nations tend to be SUNNI Muslims. Eg Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan. The more aggressive anti Israel Muslim nations tend to be SHIA. Eg Iran, Iraq, Syria. Hezbollah and Hamas are both in effect SHIA and controlled by Iran and Syria. Interestingly the Bible links together these SHIA nations and puts them in the camp of those who want to destroy Israel. Persia (modern Iran) is mentioned in Ezekiel 38 as one of the nations that attacks Israel. Psalm 83 speaks of different people who want to destroy Israel. It mentions the Philistines (modern Palestinians) and the inhabitants of Tyre. Hezbollah’s stronghold is in the city of Tyre in Lebanon. We see therefore the final conflict being Russian led but with the help of Shia Muslim people / nations. The leader of Lebanon's Islamist Hezbollah movement, Hassan Nasrallah, has said his group will never recognise Israel's right to exist. He was responding to a US suggestion that both Hezbollah and the Palestinian faction Hamas should recognise Israel before expecting any US engagement. "We reject the American conditions," he said. "As long as Hezbollah exists, it will never recognise Israel." Israel and Hezbollah's armed wing fought a bloody conflict in 2006. Mr Nasrallah made the statement rejecting the US conditions for talks said in a speech marking the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. BBConline, March 14, 2009 EVENT COMMENT They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. …. the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; BIBLE QUOTE (Psalm 83:4,7)
Netanyahu may settle for interim government Israel’s political system is so complex and fractious that it is becoming almost impossible to form any stable government. Netanyahu (who came second in the general election a few weeks ago) is still trying to form a government. What is striking about the analysis above is that he is opting for an interim government because he believes in the next few months Israel will be at war. He then thinks he will stand a better chance of bringing all parties together under him. Having failed to draw Kadima and Labor into a unity government, DEBKAfile's political sources report that Israel's prime minister-designate Binyamin Netanyahu is planning to settle for a provisional administration serving six months before calling another early election. Loth to rest his government's stability on right-wing and religious parties (61 out of 120 Knesset members), Netanyahu prefers to take his chances on a new ballot. But he rejected the recommendation from of his close advisers to notify the president next week that he is throwing in the towel in the belief that he can use the extra six months to good advantage. His main consideration is that Israel expects to be embroiled in a major military confrontation in the next few months with Iran, Hamas or Hizballah – or all three at once – a compelling scenario for a national emergency government against which Kadima and Labor will find it hard to hold out. With this eventuality in mind, the Likud leader is keeping the senior portfolios of security, treasury and justice open for members of those two parties or deposited with Likud ministers who will step aside and make way for them in an emergency. Debkafile, March 13, 2009 EVENT COMMENT They do not turn to the Most High; they are like a faulty bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword because of their insolent words. For this they will be ridiculed in the land of Egypt. BIBLE QUOTE (Hosea 7:16)
Gas drilling begins off Hadera The company which discovered abundant gas reserves off the coast of Haifa in January has begun drilling in a new site, west of Hadera. Noble Energy Inc., the Houston-based partner of Isramco Ltd., Delek Group., and Avner Oil and Gas LP, said the new offshore well, named Dalit-1, is located approximately 60 kilometers west of Hadera. The company moved its rig on the ship "Atwood Hunter" to the new drill site on Friday after having completed drilling at the Tamar-1 well 90 kilometers west of Haifa. The Tamar-1 find was eventually discovered to be more than 60 percent larger than originally estimated, according to Noble Energy officials -- reportedly more than enough to fuel the State of Israel for at least 15 years. The drilling is expected to last approximately two months and cost $130 million, company officials said. Once drilling is completed at Dalit-1, the "Atwood Hunter" will proceed to the next well, dubbed Tamar-2. There is a 40 percent chance the company will find commercial quantities of up to 20 billion cubic meters of natural gas at the site, referred to as the Michal prospect, according to the Globes business news agency. A7 News, March 10, 2009 EVENT COMMENT at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought: And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages To take a spoil BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 38:10,12) We reported a few weeks ago that Israel had discovered an enormous gas reserve off the coast of Haifa. This site called Tamar-1 has enough gas to keep Israel in energy supplies for 15 years! It would almost certainly make Israel a gas exporter. Now a new site is being explored as reported above. There is a 40% chance of more gas being found there. It cannot be coincidence that in these last days a huge “spoil” has been found that would certainly attract Russia. God’s hand is behind this find. It is now much clearer to see what Israel’s spoil is. We wait for Russia to take it. Hadera
Pope to visit Holy Land in May The visit would be the second official trip by a pope to Israel. Announcing the dates of the long-planned pilgrimage, the Pope said he would go to sites Jesus visited and would pray for "the precious gift of unity and peace for the Middle East and all of humanity". Pope Benedict's Mideast tour will touch Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories, with stops in cities including Amman, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth, the Vatican said. Though a detailed program has not yet been announced, the pontiff is expected to visit an Amman mosque, hold public Mass in Jordan and Nazareth and make a stop at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem. Israeli President Shimon Peres, who invited Pope Benedict to visit, called the trip "an important and thrilling event of the first order, that emanates a wind of peace and hope". Pope Benedict's pilgrimage comes at a time of strained relations between Israel and the Holy See. Daily Telegraph, March 9, 2009 EVENT COMMENT But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains: BIBLE QUOTE (Matthew 24:14) At a time when Israel’s leaders expect war and conflict - who should visit Israel – the Pope! He will being with him the gift of “unity and peace”. The President of Israel believes it is “thrilling”. The only other official visit by a Pope to Israel was made by John Paul II. He went in March 2000 and visited Jerusalem amongst other places. His written covenant with the Palestinians and his visit encouraged the Palestinians to claim Jerusalem as their capital. It was one of the reasons why President Clinton’s talks over Jerusalem in July 2000 failed. In September 2000 the Al Aqsa Intifada broke out and we have lived in the “age of terror” ever since. This Pope’s visit may well cause a similar situation to occur!
