What are databases?  A collection of logically related data designed to meet the information needs of one or more users e.g. telephone book, airline reservation system, files on your computer, company database of customers or products, library catalogue  Already familiar with ‘bibliographic’ databases e.g. JSTOR (an electronic index to periodical articles, containing citations, abstracts. Also books, conference proceedings, theses etc.)  N.B. ARTstor is a database of images + descriptions of those images and software to view/use them

5. How are Databases Organised?  Databases are made up of records: one record for each article/ book/image etc.  A field is the basic unit of entry in a record  For a journal article fields might include: Title, Author, Keywords, Source, Publication Year, Abstract etc.  ARTstor fields: creator, culture, title, work type, date, location, description, subject, repository, collection, source, rights  For each record (e.g. image) included in a the database, data is entered in that format.  Known as ‘metadata’  Searches of the databases can be narrowed to one or more fields
