2 Old Orchard * 2200 Monroe Street * Santa Clara, CA * Creative Ingredient Substitutions Nothings more frustrating than starting to cook or bake and only later realizing you don’t have the correct (or enough) ingredients to finish what you’ve started. Here are a few creative ingredient substitutions to try next time you’re in a pinch. Replace 1 cup of mayonnaise with 1 cup sour cream or plain yogurt Replace 1 tsp of baking powder with ½ tsp of backing soda plus ½ tsp of cream of tartar. You can also use ¼ tsp of baking soda plus ½ cup of buttermilk – then decrease the liquid in the recipe by ½ cup. Replace 1 tsp of allspice with ½ tsp of cinnamon, ¼ tsp of ginger and ¼ tsp cloves. Replace 1 cup of brown sugar with 1 cup of white sugar plus ¼ cup of molasses (decrease the liquid in the recipe by ¼ cup), or 1-1/4 cups of confectioners sugar. Replace 1 cup of beer with 1 cup of chicken broth Replace 1 cup of ketchup with one cup of tomato sauce plus 1 tsp of vinegar and 1 tbsp of sugar Please be considerate of your neighbors and recognize the quiet hours of 10pm-7am. Get Covered Now! Getting renter’s insurance may be the furthest thing from your mind when renting an apartment, but it’s essential if you want to sleep soundly at night. Your landlord has insurance on the building, so you may think you don’t need renter’s insurance. But the landlord’s policy doesn’t cover your personal property and if you have anything of value, then getting insurance is a smart idea. Without renter’s insurance, your personal property would not be replaced and you’d be liable for anyone who is injured inside your apartment. When shopping for renter’s insurance be sure you’re covered for these “names perils,” as they are called in the insurance world: fire or lighting, windstorm, smoke, vandalism or malicious mischief, theft and accidental discharge of water, among other common loss types. Your coverage should also include liability protection. You know you live in Silicon Valley when : You make $100,00 a year, yet still can’t find a place to live. Your commute time is 45 minutes and you live 8 miles away from work Two-thirds of the people you know are from Boston or New York, but you are living in PST Your home computer contains mostly hardware/software that is not on the consumer market yet. You go to The City on weekends but don’t live there because you like your car. Think that “I’m going to Fry’s” is an acceptable excuse to leave the office for a while, and your boss does too. Lost your alarm clock. You’ll get to work when you get there. On your drive to work you’re amazed by the mysterious “phantom mountains” outlines. Are they there or aren’t they? Only the smog knows for sure. You have more bandwidth in your apartment or condo than most major universities. Silicon Valley is a wide flat expanse surrounded by relatively low mountains only about 2,500 high. The valley is the former bottom of the San Francisco Bay, which drained to its current level during some prehistoric earthquake when the Golden Gate lowered. The Golden Gate is the only escape for rainfall into this area, and for most of California, for that matter. Being situated between a desert and the ocean, this environment combines the wide daily temperature swings of an arid climate with the moderate temperatures of seaside towns. Weather is sunny 200+ days of the year, and winters are characterized by intermittent mild rain – on average about 20 inches per season. Summer temperatures peak in the º range and winters may get down to freezing temperatures at night, but days are generally much warmer, rarely staying in the 40s for very long. Although the summer temperatures may seem high, the arid climate makes them so tolerable that few homes built before the 1980s had air conditioning. Insects fare poorly in an arid climate, so you can spend a lot of time outdoors in the summertime with few worries about mosquitoes or flies. There are lots of places to enjoy all the weather this area has to offer: The Beach is ½ hour away, Lake Tahoe is about 5 hours away, Yosemite Park is about 3 hours. What is Silicon Valley
