Darker Beaches, Brighter Futures: Reducing the Impacts of Artificial Lighting on Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches as Mitigation for the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Karen Shudes Sea Turtle Conservancy
St. Johns Brevard Dade Bay Broward Collier Manatee In 2009, over 50,000 sea turtles were disoriented by artificial lighting in Florida.
~ 10,000 dead birds were found under a single communication tower in one night!
Solutions do exist for the problem of light pollution. Light Pollution is Manageable Very Bad BadBetterBest
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s (NFWF) Recovered Oil Fund for Wildlife 2010 Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill NFWF’s Recovered Oil Fund for Wildlife was made possible with proceeds from BP’s share of net revenue from oil recovered from the Deepwater Horizon site.
STC worked with 76 coastal properties. Of the 76 properties, 35 were able to accept funds and complete the sea turtle lighting retrofits. Maximizing Sea Turtle Nesting Success August – December 2010
Projects took place on important nesting beaches with a history of sea turtle disorientation events. Plan to add to existing stretches of dark beach to create a contiguous stretch of nesting habitat. STC darkened 24,000 linear feet of beach and restored over 4 miles of sea turtle nesting habitat. Maximizing Sea Turtle Nesting Success

Maximizing Sea Turtle Nesting Success Awarded May (18 months) time frame. Currently working on projects throughout Florida. Contiguous expanse of restored nesting habitat. STC worked with Argent LED to produce a customized sea turtle friendly amber LED bollard light. Lighting project a success - led to 2 nd round of funding. (Phase II) (Phase II)
