1 NOURISHMENT FOR LIFE YOUR PRIMARY FOODS Kim Clavette|Your Health Matters

2 Set your New Year’s Goals with Real Nourishment - The Primary Foods Do we love to eat or what? Food is critical for our bodies and is also such a blessing in our lives! When we think about getting healthy, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Eating healthier? Yet, there are many areas of life that must be considered in the quest for good health. Physical food feeds our bodies, but what nourishes us on deeper levels? Sometimes we are fed not by food but by the energy in our lives. These moments and feelings demonstrate that everything is food. We take in thousands of experiences of life that can fulfill us physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. This is a concept we call Primary Foods. Primary Foods encompasses 12 areas of our lives. You may have never thought of these areas as “foods”, but I encourage you to read through these slides with new found curiosity, and consider how you might bring light to these areas to see where you could make adjustments to live more fully and balanced. 3 Health Health truly is wealth. When you have your health, everything else goes a whole lot better. Health is at the base of a happy and balanced life. When your body is humming and going along smoothly, it spreads into every area of your life, for the better. You wake up refreshed and happy, you look great, think clearly, and have productive days. Everything you do is created from the place of your health. The state of your gut, cells, and organs, all play a part in how and who you are. Many people spend their whole lives working on getting wealthy, and at the end, spend their whole wealth getting healthy. Why not build on your health every day, taking time to build a body that you can live with, rather than to suffer with? It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver. 4 Physical Movement Every single part of your body depends on moving. Your body cannot function well unless you are having daily activity. Exercise reduces the risk for several diseases including heart disease, adult-onset diabetes, high blood pressure or hypertension, breast cancer, osteoporosis and colon cancer. Many diseases are caused from a lack of movement. Anyone at any age can benefit from the health effects of exercise. It's never too late to start being more active and improve your health and maintain your weight. A study published a few years ago in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed people who didn't start working out until the middle of their lives, cut their risk of dying from disease by half. Exercise to stimulate, not to annihilate. The world wasn't formed in a day, and neither were we. Set small goals and build upon them. Lee Haney

5 Home Environment Where we love is Home – home our feet may leave but not our hearts. Oliver Wendell Holmes Home. The mere word brings a warm feeling, a safe and secure feeling. It brings one of comfort, love and being loved. It is a haven from the storms of life, where all gather together to restore and rebuild, to rest and be refreshed, and to go back out again. To have this kind of space, whatever that means to you, creating it according to your special tastes, needs and desires, is critical to it being a place where you truly feel “at home.” Home means many things to many different people, but each person can work to make a space that supports and nourishes the richness of the home experience. It might even be a small area of the home that is a sacred space, or it can be your whole house and even spread out into your yard and garden. The sky is the limit! This environment adds to health and well being and is an essential part of a balanced life, and your primary foods.

6 Ah, food is everything in an amazing life! We know food is not everything yet it is everything. It brings us joy, pleasure, community, comfort, satisfaction, nutrition, and more.. That being said, if you are eating “crap” you will feel like crap. To support you in feeling better, changes in your eating plan are the recommended first step. Cooking food at home is essential to being sure what is in the food. Fast food, or other prepared food can have many chemicals and ingredients that will not work well in the body to give you health. Choosing fresh ingredients and cooking your own food is a beautiful process that aids all of your family and friends, not only in health but in the rituals and memories that are born in the midst of it. Food, family, the kitchen table, it is where life happens! What you eat becomes you! Home Cooking

7 In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. Albert Schweitzer

8 Social Life We are social creatures and being social is great for your health. Those who spend time alone and are lonely, have a greater risk of developing illness and disease. Studies have established a direct biological link between being lonely and ill health. Loneliness can set into a motion a train of negative impacts inside the human body, but with additional social contact, some of these can be stopped. That means it is time to recognize and uphold those cultural values we inherited from our parents and go out with friends, chit chat, talk about this and that. By doing so you might be purchasing priceless health benefits. According to John Cacioppo, author of Loneliness: Human Nature and the Need for Human Connection, loneliness is connected to hardening of the arteries (which leads to high blood pressure), inflammation in the body, and even learning and memory problems. Life becomes harder for us when we live for others, but it also becomes richer and happier. - Albert Schweitzer

9 Relationships Relationships are one of the trickiest things to master but with some skills and tips, they can be mastered. One of the best tips you can remember is this; Most of what people do or say, is not about you! Yes, you heard it right. People bring to you their own stuff of life, they are simply sharing from their inner world, just let it pass. Another powerful tip is to show love at all times. Every single time, in any relationship, always be your highest self, coming from a place of love. In this place, you cannot go wrong. Love works every single time. If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships -the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace. -Franklin D. Roosevelt

11 Care er Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful. What did you dream of becoming when you were a child? Your choice of career has a large bearing on your level of balance, stress and satisfaction in life. It is something you spend a lot of time with and to find that which lights you up, inspires you to jump out of bed and be raring and ready to go, is a plus! On the flip side, to be at a job that you despise every day could have serious effects on your health and happiness. Some people go their whole lives in one career, and then late in life, drop it all, in trade for a fulfilling and satisfying career, based on their life’s passion. Why wait? Outline your vision, your dream, and take one step every day towards that goal. Go forward expecting everything you need to fall right into place. Why put it off to live the career and life of your dreams?

12 Education Learning, no matter what your chosen topic, is great for the brain, and good for the business of life. Stimulating the brain on a regular basis, wards off memory loss and enlivens the synapsis in your brain. A lifetime of learning is essential to mastering your “ship.” Every day there are new lessons to learn, that grow and expand your mind. Usually, if you are not learning, you are not alive. Adding in some sort of schooling in your specific field, is even better for growing yourself and your life. So, on many levels, expanding your mind is great for health and wellness. I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back. -Maya Angelou

13 Finances Money and finances are an important part of our primary needs, as almost everything takes money. To find a way to get a handle on finances is critical for a worry free life. These are some practical steps you can take. 1.Write it down. Prepare a spreadsheet of cash flow in and out. You will clearly see where you are at. 2.Prepare a budget. 3.Make your savings account automatic 4.Take food to work instead of buying it. 5.Curb impulse buying. 6.Figure out a debt repayment plan. 7.Make a savings plan for certain things you want. 8.Set goals that are smart for finances. 9.Get present to your “why.” 10.Tell someone your plan and be held accountable. In every one of these areas, we want you to be positive that this will all increase your finances. Being positive is key in the flex and flow of money matters. Wealth consists not in having great possessions but in having few wants. -Epictetus

15 Spirituality I have a notion that if you are going to be spiritually curious, you better not get cluttered up with too many materials things. -Mary Oliver Most people recognize the need for spirituality in their lives. Some call it “the universe”, others nature, and some believe in God. Others see spirituality in a different way but value it as a large part of life. To be in touch with a bigger picture, something outside of oneself gives one a greater sense of purpose in life. The focus in life, then is not in the mundane but in the magnificent, not the mediocre but in the miraculous. Love is always the highest self and for the greatest good of all. Life is filled with service to others and seeking to make a mark and make a difference with one’s life. Looking and living outside one’s own little space and place, and creating a different world view is what having a spiritual practice brings. It is a life in sacrifice to a common goal, a theme and a far larger picture. Being balanced means to have the spiritual feeding as your primary base of strong support. Often you can look at a person and know they have a wide outlook on life, bigger than themselves.

16 Joy Find a place inside where there's joy, and the joy will burn out the pain. -Joseph Campbell Joy is the expectation of good, an inner knowing that can be ever present, at the ready for times when it is most needed. Think of something that brought you great joy as a child, or in your adult life. We can access that inner joy by creating a joy set point, a level that is always inside us, that we can call up, bring to the fore, and feel, in any given moment. Savoring the moments where we had sheer joy, keeping them in our minds for easy access, is a tool you can use when times get tough. It can release any bad feelings or pain in a moment, just a thought away. Experiencing joy and adding in laughter is a curer for the heart.

17 Creativity Creativity is who you are inside, but set free in real time. It is like opening a pressure valve and when it opens, it pours focus, paint, drawing, knitting, music, or any other creative activity you have inside. It is a space where you forget time and space, and simply zone out. I suppose people would call it a sort of meditation. The mind has free rein within the creative play, to think whatever it wants, usually related to the project. Being creative is also a balancing of the brain. If we exercise one side all the time, we become imbalanced. To exercise both sides is essential for balance. Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not. -Pablo Picasso
