Brief History of the Western Orthopaedic Association First association efforts on the West Coast began with Orthopaedic clubs in Los Angeles and San Francisco after World War I; the first joint meeting between the clubs took place in 1922. First formal Association meeting was held in 1932, with James F. Watkins of San Francisco as the first president. Function of WOA was interrupted by World War II; the efforts of Alfred E. Gallant of Los Angeles created a resurgence of the Association. Today, WOA has over 1,400 members in 14 states and continues to grow, maintaining a dedication to education and professional development, promotion of collegiality among members and their families and influencing health policy on behalf of WOA members and orthopaedic patients.
