1 Sharps Safety This missing piece of the puzzle

2 A good idea… In 2001 Congress passed the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act, hoping to help prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens such as HIV, HBV and HCV from accidental sharps injuries.

3 Much to do… Unfortunately, due to slow adoption of the Act by the healthcare community, it is estimated that 4.8 million workers have suffered sharps injuries since 2001.

4 The cost is high… $600 direct cost for follow up on each injury, even if no infection occurs. An estimated 800,000 sharps injuries occur annually $1,000,000 for testing, treatment, lost time and disability for serious infections. At least 1,000 serious infections occur annually. $600 direct cost for follow up on each injury, even if no infection occurs. 5 But it does not have to be… The CDC estimates that an average of 75% of all sharps injuries can be prevented by using engineered sharps safety devices. This would equate to 600,000 prevented sharps injuries annually and over $1 billion a year in healthcare cost savings.
