Green ICT 4 Development in Support of a Circular Economy

WHO WE ARE Close the Gap: Bridging the Digital Divide –Founded in 2003 as a social enterprise –Serving African, Latin American, Asian regions –300,000+ computers collected –80,000 computers deployed in developing countries –1,500,000 unique IT users reached weekly WorldLoop: Changing the E-waste Cycle –Founded in 2009 by Close the Gap –Serving Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America –Operational in 7 countries across 2 continents –900+ tons of e-waste collected and processed (1296+ tons CO 2 emissions avoided) –90+ tons of hazardous waste spared from landfills

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS Poverty & Hunger Education Gender Equality Health Environmental Sustainability ↑ access to INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES = SOCIAL BENEFITS ↑ access to INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES = SOCIAL BENEFITS

ACCESS TO ICT CAN BE LIMITED BY… The high costs of quality IT equipment.

ICT PROJECTS REQUIRE… Local expertise.

ICT END-USERS NEED ACCESS TO… Local qualified IT teachers.

COLLECTION REPAIR / REFURBISHMENT TRANSPORT INSTALLATION / MAINTENANCE TRAINING USE WHAT CLOSE THE GAP DOES…

BUT BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE CAN CREATE A DIGITAL DUMP

ICT PROJECTS ARE UNSUSTAINABLE… In the absence of safe e-waste disposal options.

DEVELOPING COUNTRIES… Lack reliable waste management infrastructure.

E-WASTE CONTAINS… Hazardous, toxic AND valuable material.

VALUE EXTRACTION… Creates an informal economy.

AT THE RISK OF… Environmental and human health.

Recycling efficiency = Collection xMaterials recoveryProcessing 80%x50%x20%= 8% THERE ARE SOLUTIONS AVAILABLE Increase processing efficiency locally Proper dismantling & pre-processing A safe & environmentally sound solution for ALL fractions Increase recovery through international disposal Informal sector in Africa

Pre-processing FACILITIES needed Quid recycling of hazardous NON VALUABLES THE CHALLENGES TO IMPLEMENT MANAGEMENT SUPPORT needed

RUN LOCAL COLLECTIONMANUALLY DISMANTLE PRE-PROCESS SEPARATE COMPLEX & HAZARDOUS MATERIAL COORDINATE INTERNATIONAL SHIPMENTS TO TREAT COMPLEX & HAZARDOUS MATERIAL WITH BEST TECHNOLOGIES AVAILABLE WHAT WORLDLOOP DOES Working with local entrepreneurs to:

2013 Belgian Business Award for the Environment 2014 Sustainable Partnership Award According to the jury, this project is based on solid economic and environmental logic and combines “the best of two worlds" through an innovative partnership. By joining Umicore’s expertise in recycling with the experience of WorldLoop in Africa, the partners are contributing to a safe and sustainable treatment of e- waste in this region. The jury was impressed by their work with local actors to train and empower them. Watch the video (EN)video This partnership was developed by Belgian organizations, but its impact is most apparent in the South. Through Changing the e -waste cycle WorldLoop, Close the Gap, Recupel, Umicore, Coolrec, Galloo, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and others are working together to address the environmental risks of electronic waste (e-waste) in AfricaChanging the e -waste cycle Watch the video (NL with subtitles)video

GREEN ICT4D: A CLOSED LOOP

E-RESOURCE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME 100 certificate can recycle 2 tons of e-waste and Avoid 2.88 tons of CO2 emissions tons of e- waste. 500 certificates can help run local awareness campaigns in an urban community in sub- Saharan Africa. 1,000 certificates can start up a small e-waste collection and dismantling project in a developing country. The funds go to local entrepreneurs to… To start up e-waste collection and dismantling activities. Incremental support to help obtain financial self-sufficiency. Drive local e-waste awareness raising and collection campaigns. Ensure ESG standards are met. 100% environmentally sound treatment of ALL e-waste fractions. Enabling ICT for development projects to fulfill a “zero-waste-to-landfill” policy, pollution reduction, resource conservation and local job stimulation.
