1  HOTVOLC : Web-based Satellite-data-driven reporting system dedicated to the real-time monitoring of volcanic ash emissions WEZARD Workshop ; May 30th – June 1st 2012 ; WMO Geneva, Switzerland HOTVOLC OBSERVING SYSTEM (OPGC/LMV * ) HotVolc WEB-GIS interface for Meteosat zone.

2  HOTVOLC : Web-based Satellite-data-driven reporting system dedicated to the real-time monitoring of volcanic ash emissions WEZARD Workshop ; May 30th – June 1st 2012 ; WMO Geneva, Switzerland HOTVOLC OBSERVING SYSTEM (OPGC/LMV * ) 6 geostationnary satellites : MSG-0, MTSAT, MSG-RSS, Meteosat-7, GOES-E, GOES-W  Monitoring of all volcanoes on earth  Time resolution up to 1 image / 5 mins and 24h/24h 3 Polar-orbiting satellites : MODIS, AVHRR, ASTER, (OMI, CALIOP) 4 eruptive products : Ash product, SO 2 product, Lava product, RGB product Automatic processing and direct access HotVolc website :

3  HotVolc goals and capabilities WEZARD Workshop ; May 30th – June 1st 2012 ; WMO Geneva, Switzerland HOTVOLC OBSERVING SYSTEM (OPGC/LMV * ) 1. Early detection of the eruptive activity (lava flows and ash plumes, alarm procedure) 2. Localize and track eruptive volcanic products (ground / atmosphere) 3. Real-time first order retrieval (semi- quantitative – scaled intensity 1-10) 4. Near-real-time quantitative retrieval (i.e., ash concentration mg/m 3 ) 5. Real-time web diffusion of interpreted data to the end-users (i.e., decision makers, scientists) 6. Build a complete/continuous open- access archive of interpreted data Eyjafjallajökull 6-8 Mai 2010  NRT Ash concentration (mg/m 3 ) calculated every 15 mins with Meteosat  Related products: -Ash cloud height & extent -Ash radius and distribution Ash [0,5-6 mg/m 3 ]

4  Case study : 2 crisis WEZARD Workshop ; May 30th – June 1st 2012 ; WMO Geneva, Switzerland HOTVOLC OBSERVING SYSTEM (OPGC/LMV * )  Eyjafjallajökull : 14 April – 23 May, 2010  Grimsvötn : 21 May – 25 May, 2011  SO HotVolc  Operationnal mode  39 days of monitoring (3744 MSG images)  Qualitative and quantitative products  Web diffusion  Officials reports to the french crisis cell (CMVOA)*  SO HotVolc  Operationnal mode  5 days of monitoring (80 MSG images)  2000 maps  Elaborated products (Ex. ash_index)  Automated web diffusion  Officials reports to the french crisis cell (CMVOA)* SO 2 Radius Concentrations HF = 15-mins *CMVOA: Centre Ministériel de Veille Opérationnelle et d’Alerte DGAC/DGPR/DGEC/Météo-France/IPGP/LMV-OPGC/BRGM/INERIS
