2 T YPE OF AGRICULTURE PRODUCE Sector is predominantly subsistence through rain-fed production of cereals mainly sorghum and maize. The irrigated agriculture has a commercial component through production and selling of fruits and vegetables mainly orange,mango, guavas, papaya and tomatoes,cabbages, okra, onions and lettuce respectively. Rain-fed farming accounts for 90% and irrigation 10% of all agricultural activities in the country UK-Somaliland Trade & Investment Forum 14 October 2014

3 G OVERNMENT INITIATIVES FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT Directed to attract direct foreign investment which is expected to enhance local skills, know how, and accelerate growth through capital accumulation, technology transfer and trade. There are also initiatives to review and formulate Acts on Agricultural Production, natural resource management, Information Management System, Marketing and Investment and Coordination and Institutional Framework. Government continues to create an enabling environment for private sector to participate in production and commercial activities that were once performed by the Government. This will improve efficient use of the public resources, accelerate diversification, enhance domestic competitiveness and promote environmental sustainable development UK-Somaliland Trade & Investment Forum 14 October 2014

4 I NVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN A GRICULTURE There is great potential, which if appropriately exploited, will greatly improve agricultural production and increase its contribution to the national economy and household food security. These include:- A large cropping areas and diverse production resources; Land resource base estimated at a total land area of 68,000 square miles (178,459.2km 2 ) equivalent to 17,845,920 hectares (approximately 18 million hectares) out of which 10% equivalent to 1.8 million hectares are suitable for crop production with proper land laws guiding their use. Diverse and favourable climate and agro-ecological zones, which can support a wide range of crop production species and activities. Readily available domestic market due to increasing population, urbanization and high economic growth that stimulate higher demands for crop products. Geographical location of the country makes it accessible to potential export markets. Availability of initially trained manpower and relatively low cost labour in most fields of crop/agriculture production. Existence of a wide range of valuable Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) related to crop production. 5 L IVESTOCK The economy of Somaliland mainly depends on livestock production, which has historically and culturally been the mainstay of livelihood for the majority of the people. The livestock production system in Somaliland is predominantly pastoral and agro-pastoral, employing over 70% of the population. Livestock production contributes 60% of the GDP and about 85% of foreign export earnings. Livestock is the source of livelihood for pastoralists, contributes to the Government revenues, and provides employment to a wide range of professionals and other service providers.
