God’s Covenant with Israel Fall of Jerusalem 30 A.D. Moses 1400 B.C. Beginning of the nation of Israel 70 A.D. End of the nation of Israel Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites." (Exodus 19:5-6 NIV)

God’s Covenant with Israel Fall of Jerusalem 30 A.D. Moses 1400 B.C. Beginning of the nation of Israel 70 A.D. End of the nation of Israel The people all responded together, "We will do everything the LORD has said." So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD. (Exodus 19:8 NIV)

God’s Covenant with Israel and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant, then I will do this to you: I will bring upon you sudden terror, ……(Leviticus 26:15-16 NIV) What would happen if they broke the covenant? And I will bring the sword upon you to avenge the breaking of the covenant. When you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague among you, and you will be given into enemy hands. (Leviticus 26:25 NIV) Prophecy made by Moses in 1400 B.C.

God’s Covenant with Israel All the nations will ask: "Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this fierce, burning anger?" And the answer will be: "It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt. They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them. Therefore the LORD's anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book. In furious anger and in great wrath the LORD uprooted them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now." (Deuteronomy 29:24-28 NIV) What would happen if they broke the covenant? Prophecy made by Moses in 1400 B.C.

God’s Covenant with Israel I will turn your cities into ruins and lay waste your sanctuaries, and I will take no delight in the pleasing aroma of your offerings. (Leviticus 26:31 NIV) What would happen if they broke the covenant? Fall of Jerusalem 30 A.D. Moses 1400 B.C. Beginning of the nation of Israel 70 A.D. End of the nation of Israel B.C. 1 st Destruction & Captivity

70 A.D B.C.. Jeremiah (620 B.C.) Predicted the Captivity and the Return B.C. 70 years

HOWEVER, Moses Also Predicted a Final End for Israel The LORD saw this and rejected them because he was angered by his sons and daughters. "I will hide my face from them," he said, "and see what their end will be; for they are a perverse generation, children who are unfaithful. (Deuteronomy 32:19-20 NIV) They are a nation without sense, there is no discernment in them. If only they were wise and would understand this and discern what their end will be! (Deuteronomy 32:28-29 NIV) 70 A.D B.C B.C.. Destruction of Jerusalem

Daniel sees the Final End for Israel After the sixty-two 'sevens,' the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing of the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him." (Daniel 9:26-27 NIV) 70 A.D B.C B.C.. Destruction of Jerusalem 1 st Destruction & Captivity

"At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people-- everyone whose name is found written in the book-- will be delivered. (Daniel 12:1 NIV) But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge." (Daniel 12:4 NIV) The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, "It will be for a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed." (Daniel 12:7 NIV) He replied, "Go your way, Daniel, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end. (Daniel 12:9 NIV)

Malachi Predicts the Baptism of Fire "Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire," says the LORD Almighty. "Not a root or a branch will be left to them. But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall. Then you will trample down the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I do these things," says the LORD Almighty. "Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel. "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse." (Malachi 4:1-6 NIV) But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist. (Matthew 17:12-13)

Fall of Jerusalem 30 A.D. Moses 1400 B.C. Beginning of the nation of Israel 70 A.D. End of the nation of Israel 440 B.C. Malachi John The Last Page of the Last Book of the Old Testament Predicts the LAST DAYS or the END TIME after the coming of John the Baptist

JESUS saw the same Final End Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. "Do you see all these things?" he asked. "I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down." As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age ?" (Matthew 24:1-3 NIV) 70 A.D B.C B.C.. Destruction of Jerusalem

JESUS saw the same Final End You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. (Matthew 24:6 NIV) And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. "So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel-- let the reader understand-- then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. (Matthew 24:14- 16) "When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. (Luke 21:20-21 NIV)

The APOSTLES saw the same Final End Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. (Hebrews 9:26 NIV) The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. (1 Peter 4:7 NIV) 70 A.D B.C B.C.. Destruction of Jerusalem

The Teaching of Jesus All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. (Matthew 10:22-23 NIV) Jesus talking to the 12 A Coming of the Lord in the life time of the Apostles

The Teaching of Jesus For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. (Matthew 16:27-28 NIV) Jesus talking to the 12 A Coming of the Lord in the life time of the Apostles

The Teaching of Jesus As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace-- but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you." (Luke 19:41-44 NIV)

The Teaching of Jesus "Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. (Matthew 21:43 NIV) Parable of the Land Owner Matthew 21:33-46

I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation. (Matthew 23:35-36 NIV) God’s Wrath on Israel in that Generation Matthew 23:29-39

Jesus’ Prediction of the Destruction of Jerusalem And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation. (Matthew 24:34 NIV)

Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. "Do you see all these things?" he asked. "I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down." As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. 24 J. Culbertson Western (Wailing Wall) Stones up to 40 feet long - 37 Tons

J. Culbertson Caesar gave orders that they should demolish the entire city and temple, but should leave many of the towers standing … and much of the wall that enclosed the west side of the city. This wall was spared to make protection for the Romans and to demonstrate to future generations what kind of city the valor of the Romans had conquered. Josephus – an eye witness

“Solomon’s Porch (Portico) was 300 meters long (nearly 3 football fields) with 162 Corinthian Columns up to 33 meters tall.

“These Things” – the destruction of Jerusalem Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. "Do you see all these things?" he asked. "I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down." As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" (Matthew 24:1-3 NIV)

(Matthew 24:1-3 NIV) Fulfillment at 3 different times or at the same time "Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?" (Mark 13:4 NIV) "Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?" (Luke 21:7 NIV)

The sign of Jesus’ Coming is the same as the sign of Jerusalem’s Destruction "Tell us when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" (Matthew 24:1-3 NIV) "Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?" (Luke 21:7 NIV)

Did the Lord Come when the temple was torn down? "Tell us when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" (Matthew 24:1-3 NIV) All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. (Matthew 10:22-23 NIV)

Did the Lord Come when the temple was torn down? "Tell us when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" (Matthew 24:1-3 NIV) For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom." (Matthew 16:27-28 NIV)

The End of the Age "Tell us when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" (Matthew 24:3 NIV) Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world ? (Matthew 24:3 King James Version)

The End of the Age "Tell us when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" (Matthew 24:3 NIV) Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 37 God’s Covenant with Israel 30 A.D. Moses 1400 B.C. Beginning of the nation of Israel Fall of Jerusalem 70 A.D. End of the nation of Israel Last Days The End of the Age

God’s Covenant with Israel But God found fault with the people and said: "The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. … … …By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear. (Hebrews 8:8-13 NIV)

Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ, 'and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. (Matthew 24:4-8 NIV)

The land was over run with magicians, seducers, and imposters, who drew the people after them in multitudes into secluded places and deserts to see signs and miracles promised by the power of God Josephus – eyewitness and historian

Josephus – Eyewitness and Historian There was another body of wicked men gotten together, not so impure in their actions, but more wicked in their intentions, which laid waste the happy state of the city. These were men who deceived and deluded the people under pretense of Divine inspiration, but were for seeking innovations and changes of the government; and these prevailed with the multitude to act like madmen, and went before them into the wilderness, as pretending that God would there show them the signals of liberty. … … But there was a false prophet that did the Jews more mischief than the former; he was a cheat, and pretended to be a prophet also and got 30,000 men that were deluded by him

(Matthew 24:4-8 NIV) All of these things happened between 30 – 70 A.D.

"Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. (Matthew 24:9-13 NIV) The Book of Acts tells this story

And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:14 NIV) Was this done in the first century? Understanding the Bible use of “whole world” and “all nations” Now it came about in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. (Luke 2:1 NASB)

Understanding the Bible use of “whole world” and “all nations” Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. (Acts 2:5 NIV) Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-- we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" (Acts 2:9-11 NIV)

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. (Romans 1:8 NIV) And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:14 NIV) Was the gospel preached to “all nations” in the first century? according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith; (Romans 16:25-26 NASB)

if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister. (Colossians 1:23 NASB) And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:14 NIV) Was the gospel preached to “all nations” in the first century?

the gospel, which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth; (Colossians 1:5-6 NASB) And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:14 NIV) Was the gospel preached to “all nations” in the first century?

"But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is at hand. "Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are in the midst of the city depart, and let not those who are in the country enter the city; (Luke 21:20-21 NASB) "Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains; (Matthew 24:15-16 NASB)

"Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. "And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate." (Daniel 9:26-27 NASB) Matthew 24:15 “Abomination of Desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet” (536 B.C.)

"So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel-- let the reader understand-- then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. (Matthew 24:15-20 NIV) Is Matthew 24 talking about a universal destruction (end of universe) or local catastrophe?

"So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel-- let the reader understand-- then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. (Matthew 24:15-20 NIV) Is Matthew 24 talking about a universal destruction (end of universe) or a more local catastrophe?

"So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel-- let the reader understand-- then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. 55 "So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel-- let the reader understand-- then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. (Matthew 24:15-20 NIV) Is Matthew 24 talking about a universal destruction (end of universe) or a more local catastrophe?

For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now-- and never to be equaled again. If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. (Matthew 24:21-22 NIV) The Greatest Period of Tribulation “All the calamities which have befallen any nation from the beginning of the world to now were but small in comparison with those of the Jews” Josephus – Eyewitness and Historian

"At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people-- everyone whose name is found written in the book-- will be delivered. (Daniel 12:1 NIV) The Greatest Period of Tribulation "It will be for a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed." (Daniel 12:7 NIV)

The Great Tribulation of A.D. The Jewish Rebellion, 1,000,000 killed in Jerusalem. Three Jewish factions inside the city fighting each other while the Romans surrounded the city and killed anyone who left. Those who tried to desert the city were killed by their fellow Jews Jews in every city of the Roman Empire were killed or persecuted

The Great Tribulation of A.D. Example, the day of Jewish rebellion saw every Jew murdered in Caesarea A few days later 50,000 were killed in one stadium in Alexandria, Egypt Three civil wars in Rome at the same time as Jewish rebellion – Romans fighting Romans for control Nero – the emperor – killed members of the senate and his own family Four Emperors of Rome either committed suicide or were assassinated within a few months

At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect-- if that were possible. See, I have told you ahead of time. "So if anyone tells you, 'There he is, out in the desert,' do not go out; or, 'Here he is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather. (Matthew 24:23-28 NIV)

Josephus – eyewitness and historian A false prophet was the occasion of these people’s destruction, who had made a public proclamation in the city that very day, that God had commanded them to get up upon the temple, and that they should be given miraculous signs of their deliverance. Now, there was then a great number of false prophets used by the tyrants (zealots) …… that they should wait for a miraculous deliverance of God

Kett’s History From the death of Herod the Great.. To the destruction of Jerusalem, the Jewish history is filled with names of false Christs and false prophets who deceived both the Jews and the Samaritans. None appeared BEFORE this period and not more than one for five or six centuries AFTER IT.

The Apostle John in 65 A.D. Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. (1 John 4:1-3 NIV)

The Apostle John in 65 A.D. Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. (1 John 2:18 NIV)

"Immediately after the distress of those days "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.' (Matthew 24:29 NIV)

Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty. Because of this, all hands will go limp, every man's heart will melt. Terror will seize them, pain and anguish will grip them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame. See, the day of the LORD is coming--a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger-- to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it. The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The rising sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light. I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless. I will make man scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir. Therefore I will make the heavens tremble; and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the LORD Almighty, in the day of his burning anger. (Isaiah 13:6-13 NIV) An oracle concerning Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz saw: (Isaiah 13:1 NIV) See, I will stir up against them the Medes, who do not care for silver and have no delight in gold. (Isaiah 13:17 NIV) Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, the glory of the Babylonians' pride, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah. (Isaiah 13:19 NIV)

These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
