Currents and Pollution A spotted gray trigger fish was just big enough to fit inside a caulking tube, and became highly protective of its tiny habitat, snapping at approaching fish. Light bulbs, bottle caps, toothbrushes, Popsicle sticks and tiny pieces of plastic, each the size of a grain of rice, inhabit the Pacific garbage patch, an area of widely dispersed trash that doubles in size every decade and is now believed to be roughly twice the size of Texas.
Cities around the country have started placing bans on the use of plastic bags. San Jose’s ban started 1/1/2012
