Introduction Mysterious, paranoid; small plump man Tries to hang himself Avoids all responsibility to help fight the plague Ends up destroying himself

Initial reaction Before the plague… Tries to hang himself Becomes suspicious and paranoid Suffers alone from guilt Feels alone in his state of constant fear

During the plague… Happy, relaxed The police are too busy to arrest him No longer feels alone in his state of constant fear Spends most of his time eating expensive meals and leaving big tips

During the plague… Engages in profitable smuggling trade Does not help to fight the disease Introduces Rambert to Raoul and Gonzales to help him escape

When the plague ends… Loses mental balance Shoots people Dragged to jail Ending the chronicle with Cottard, a man “who had an ignorant, that is to say lonely, heart” (302).

Existentialist beliefs & actions Being-in-itself Inauthentic Anguish Bad faith Lâche Salaud

Philosophy of life Prefers suicide to judgment Most detests: being cut off from others “A lonely man who hated loneliness it has made an accomplice.” Disagrees with Tarrou’s “that the surest way of not being cut off from others was having a clean consience.” Lives for himself only
