1 EXCURSSION AROUND KILIMANJARO If you are not interested in summiting Kilimanjaro but would like to experience the nature & culture around the mountain, a shorter trek may suite your needs. NOTE: It is against national park regulations to summit on one of these treks.

2 MARANGU VILLAGE Marangu is a large village located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Marangu is a lively market town with a cool climate. The location of the town makes it an ideal starting point for climbing mount Kilimanjaro. Marangu is also an excellent location for hiking, bird watching and taking in the sights of rural Africa. The cultural tourism program offers the opportunity for visitors to watch traditional blacksmiths, visit nearby caves and waterfalls as well as experience life in the local chagga tribe. People around Marangu village are very welcoming and we hope you will enjoy your time with them. While in Marangu one can learn more about the chagga culture by visiting a traditional chagga house made of straw roofing. Also the traditional food made by bananas and local brew known as Mbege can be tasted. 3 LAKE CHALA ACTIVITIES: PICNIC LUNCH & DRINKS ADVENTURE WALKING/TREKING CULTURE EXPLORATION PHOTOGRAPHIC SCENERY BOATING CAMPING & SPECIAL BONFIRE (DINNER & BREAKFAST INCLUDED) Sightseeing: Lake Chala is a beautiful area located on the western side of Kilimanjaro at the Kenya/Tanzanian border, about 2.5 hour drive from Moshi. The lake is filled and drained by underground streams. Located near the slopes of Kilimanjaro, the lake is amazingly clear with steep crater walls. It is the deepest inland water body in Africa with the depth of about 3km. Due to the enormous depth boating is recommended. Visitors can hike at the lake and enjoy the beautiful view and fresh air. 4 MATERUNI WATERFALL ACTIVITIES PICNIC LUNCH ADVENTURE WALKING/TREKING CULTURE EXPLORATION WATERFALL SWIMMING PHOTOGRAPHIC SCENERY Sightseeing: A 45 to 60 minute walk brings you to the Materuni Falls, where you will have a picnic lunch at riverside. After lunch you may rest and enjoy the peace and beauty, or your guide will take your group for a walk above the falls, into the Kilimanjaro rainforest, observing more flora and hopefully, some monkeys or other wildlife. 5 NYUMBA YA MUNGU ACTIVITIES PICNIC LUNCH ADVENTURE WALKING/TREKING CULTURE EXPLORATION PHOTOGRAPHIC SCENERY Sightseeing: Nyumba ya Mungu is one the most striking features in the country. The crystal clear water runs down the slopes of Kilimanjaro in the deep valleys as sparkling streams. These streams pour their water in the legendry reservoir called Nyumba ya Mungu. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, swimming and walking around the dam to enjoy the spectacular views. Cultural practices of the local people, lifestyle, custom and beliefs are also available. 6 ACTIVITIES PICNIC LUNCH ADVENTURE WALKING/TREKING CULTURE EXPLORATION PHOTOGRAPHIC SCENERY PRICE: $120USD / PERSON (INCUDES ALL SITE FEES & TRANSPORT) RUNDUGAI HOT SPRING Day 1: Pick up from your hotel after breakfast for transfer to Rundugai Masai market (usually on Mondays). From here you start trekking with a guide. Hot lunch at the campsite. The trek goes to Chemka waterfalls, where you'll spend the night. Take a swim in the natural bassin of the hot spring. Mt. Kilimanjaro is usually clearly seen from here in the early morning hours. Distance: 14 km. Includes: (LUNCH), (DINNER); and CAMPING. Day 2: Morning swim followed by breakfast. Explore the hot spring surroundings, like farms etc. After lunch drive back to town.

7 1 DAY TRIP MARANGU GATE TO MANDARA HUT AND BACK TO MARANGU Marangu Gate (6,000 ft) – Mandara Hut (9,000 ft) Ascent hiking time: hours Habitat: Montane forest After breakfast and briefing, walk to the Marangu Gate (about 20 minutes). After registration at the park gate, begin hiking through rainforest from the park gate (6,000 ft) to Mandara Hut (9,000 ft). This takes about 3 to 4 hours. There is a stop halfway for picnic lunch. Reach Mandara Hut early in the afternoon. After a short tour at the hut, start descending to Marangu gate, reaching it later in the afternoon. A side trip to Maundi Crater (about 15 minutes away) offers a chance to see the surrounding area as well as the views of Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Return toMarangu /Moshi in the late afternoon and overnight. After registration at the park gate, begin hiking through rainforest from the park gate (6,000 ft) to Mandara Hut (9,000 ft). This will take about hours. There is a stop halfway for picnic lunch. Reach Mandara Huts early afternoon. After a short tour at Mandara, you will have an evening meal and stay overnight at the hut. (BLD) Day 2: Return to Marangu Gate, with a side trip to Maundi Crater (about 15 minutes away) for an opportunity to see the surrounding area and expansive views of Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Return to Marangu / Moshi in the afternoon and overnight. After registration at the park gate, begin hiking through rainforest from the park gate (6,000 ft) to Mandara Hut (9,000 ft). This will take about 3 to 4 hours. There is a stop halfway for lunch. Reach Mandara Huts early afternoon. After a short tour at Mandara, you will have an evening meal and stay overnight at the hut. (BLD) Mandara Hut (9,000 ft) – Horombo Huts (12,000 ft) Hiking time: 6 hours Habitat: Heathland Day 2: After breakfast and packing, leave camp and hike to Horombo Huts (12,000 ft). This section should take around 5 to 6 hrs. You will travel through lower heathland with small shrubs being the main vegetation. There is a stop halfway for lunch. Views of Mawenzi are amazing. The summit of Kibo can be seen from Horombo Huts. Arrive at Horombo Huts mid to late afternoon. Bathrooms are available with cold running water. Dinner and overnight at hut. (BLD) Descending from Horombo to the Marangu Gate Day 3: After breakfast, pack up gear and descend to Mandara Huts for lunch. Continue on to the park gate and return to Moshi late in the afternoon and overnight.
