The film was awarded the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival the same year.
His greatest success remains probably "Never on Sunday", a 1960 film whose action takes place in Greece. The story is that of a prostitute, played by the actress Melina Mercouri he would later marry. Jules Dassin plays in this film the role of the main character, a naive American tourist who tries to get back on the right path. On both sides of the Atlantic, the film is a huge hit and earned him a nomination for an Oscar for best director.
