November 29 – December 5, 2009 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.
What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:
HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please me:

European Union celebrates first day of Lisbon Treaty The European Union celebrated on Tuesday the entering into force of the Lisbon Treaty after nine years of "battle" including referendum rejections in France, the Netherlands and Ireland. The Lisbon Treaty, signed by EU leaders in Portugal's capital in December 2007, resurrected most elements of the controversial European Constitution thrown out by French and Dutch voters four years ago. Daily Telegraph, December 1, 2009 EVENT COMMENT ten kings [10 kings = Europe covering same territory as the original 10 Barbarian kingdoms that arose after the Roman Empire collapsed] ….These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. BIBLE QUOTE (Revelation 17:12,13) At midnight on Monday night everything changed in relation to Europe. The Lisbon Treaty came into force. When it did, it effectively created a state. A state as defined by article 1 of the 1933 “Convention on the Rights and Duties of States” should possess the following 4 qualifications... (a) a permanent population; (b) a defined territory; (c) government; and (d) capacity to enter into relations with the other states. Until yesterday, the EU qualified on grounds (a), (b) and (c). Now it has ticked the final box. Under the Lisbon Treaty, which came into force Monday, Europe acquires “legal personality”, which gives it the right to sign accords and treaties with other states. Nor is this right simply theoretical: the EU now has a foreign minister, a diplomatic corps (the European External Action Service) and 160 overseas embassies. From a Biblical perspective this is fulfilment of prophecy. In Revelation 17 a beast ascends out of a bottomless pit. When you compare the beast to the 4 th beast in Daniel 7 you will see that they are the same beast. The 4 th beast was that of the Roman Empire. This final beast is the Roman Empire resurrected. Kings have given their power and strength to the beast. There are still individual nations and governments but they (through this treaty) have created a beast. Precisely the picture in Revelation 17!!
EU joins Palestinian’s diplomatic war on Jerusalem The Israeli Foreign Ministry warned Tuesday morning that a Swedish - led attempt to have the European Union recognize eastern Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian Authority will backfire. The draft proposal, expected to be placed on the EU table next week, would damage efforts to reach peace with the PA and damage the EU’s standing as a trusted entity, ministry spokesman Yossi Levy said. “The Europeans must pressure the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table," he added. "Such moves like the one being led by Sweden lead to the opposite outcome." The Swedish proposal also omits any recognition of the rest of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Israel National News, December 1, 2009 EVENT COMMENT For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. BIBLE QUOTE (Zechariah 14:2) It seems incredible but on the day the beast was created by the 10 kings (ie Europe), Sweden attempts to insert language into an EU resolution on the Middle East that would recognize east Jerusalem as the capital of a future independent Palestinian state! On December 7 th, EU ministers will meet to discuss a resolution that would officially call for the division of Jerusalem. "This disrupts the balance," an Israeli official said, adding that the resolution is being pushed forward by the Swedes, who hold the rotating presidency of the EU, without any prior coordination with Israel. Israel sternly warned the European Union on Tuesday against recognizing east Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital, saying such a move would damage Europe's credibility as a Mideast mediator. As Europe is a legal entity and has a foreign ministry it feels that it is now able to influence the Middle East Peace process. The conflict over Jerusalem draws near….
Russia and Vatican establish diplomatic relations Russia and the Vatican have established full diplomatic relations ending long-standing tensions, the Kremlin announced on Thursday. The announcement, which came after President Dmitry Medvedev met Pope Benedict XVI, means that full-fledged embassies will be established in Moscow and Rome. Since 1990, the two sides have maintained representation below the rank of ambassador. "President Medvedev told Pope Benedict XVI that he had signed a decree concerning the establishment of full diplomatic relations with the Vatican," said Natalia Timakova, a Kremlin spokesman. Relations between the Vatican and the Russian Orthodox Church have been tense for centuries, and were again strained in recent years by Orthodox accusations of Catholic proselytising in post-Soviet Russia. The Russian Church has recently moved to soften its stance. Daily Telegraph, December 3, 2009 EVENT COMMENT (Daniel 7:8) behold, there came up among them another little horn [with eyes and mouth] (Daniel 8:9) And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, BIBLE QUOTE In Daniel chapter 7 we read of a little horn. In Daniel chapter 8 we read of a little horn. They are both very different though. The chapter 7 horn is a little horn that remains little. It speaks great things, has eyes and a mouth, changes times and laws and makes war on the saints. Most importantly it comes out of the Roman Empire (the 4 th beast). The chapter 8 little horn is totally different. It starts little but grows. It invades Israel, removes the daily sacrifice, has a fierce countenance, is deceitful and also stands against Christ. Most importantly it comes out of GREECE. Both horns refer to specific leaders. Daniel 7 horn refers to the head of the papacy – the POPE. Daniel 8 horn referred initially to Antiochus Epiphanes the original king of the north. The latter day king of the north is Russia and the current head is Medvedev. We see therefore the little horn of Daniel 7 and the horn that grew of Daniel 8 making an agreement to work together. They will BOTH make their stands against Christ when he returns!
Vladimir Putin says he's ready to be president again Vladimir Putin hit out at the tasteless extravagance of Russia's "nouveaux riches" on Thursday in a marathon question and answer session on state television designed to bolster his already strong popularity ratings. Casting himself as a modest man of the people who had single-handedly saved the country from financial meltdown in the last year, the Russian prime minister said the gap between the haves and have-nots was too wide and lashed out at greedy businessmen. "Some businessmen have no sense of social responsibility and just want to squeeze as much money out of people as they can," he fumed. Mr Putin's performance in the live four hour televised appearance gave viewers the impression that he and not President Dmitry Medvedev ran the country, reinforcing Mr Putin's status as the front-runner in a presidential race still three years away. The prime minister said he would think about making a presidential bid in 2012 depending on the state of the nation nearer the time. "I will think about it. There is plenty of time," he said. Daily Telegraph, December 3, 2009 EVENT COMMENT a stern-faced king, a master of intrigue, will arise. He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy the mighty men and the holy people. He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power. BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 8:23-25 NIV) The reality in Russia is that Mr Putin still runs the country. He maintained much of the power and as we saw in the war in Georgia it was Mr Putin that made the statements and appeared to control the army. Mr Medvedev has no phone in show – his profile has remained very low whereas Mr Putin continues to steal the limelight. Mr Putin certainly fits the description of the little horn of Daniel 8. A stern faced king who considers himself superior. Who becomes strong but not by his own power. Who causes deceit to prosper. The verses below speak of the little horn. It could be Putin! Antiochus Epiphanes – king of the north Vladimir Putin – king of the north both stern faced
Ahmadinejad says nuclear enrichment will increase We must be nearing the end game now with Iran. Iran has totally rejected UN offer of having its uranium enriched in Russia. But it then went further. Not only would it not send its uranium out of the country it would begin mass production of enriched uranium in Iran itself. Tehran’s announcement of plans to build another 10 enrichment plants capable of producing 300 tons of enriched uranium a year was in total defiance of America and Israel. Deliberately taunting Israel, he said in a speech broadcast live by state television: "The Zionist regime is nothing. Even its masters cannot do a damn thing." For Iran the nuclear issue is "over.” How will Israel respond to this? With war?! Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday Iran would enrich uranium to a higher level, in comments likely to heighten tensions over the country's nuclear ambitions. "Iran will produce fuel enriched to a level of 20 per cent," Mr Ahmadinejad told cheering crowds in a speech in Isfahan, in a move effectively rejected a UN-brokered deal designed to minimise the risk of Tehran producing material for atomic bombs. Nuclear reactors used for power generation typically use uranium enriched to a level of 4 to 5 per cent. Uranium enriched to 90 per cent purity is usually used to make bombs, but lower concentrations can also be used, as long as proportionately larger total quantities of fuel are used. Iran could be enriching to 20 per cent "within months" after changing the settings of its centrifuge machines, said David Albright, head of the Institute for Science and International Security, which tracks suspected nuclear proliferators. "Once at 20 per cent, they'd be 90 per cent of the way to 90 per cent enrichment in terms of the time it takes," he said. Daily Telegraph, December 2, 2009 EVENT COMMENT Their [the Medes = modern Iranians] bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children. BIBLE QUOTE (Isaiah 13:18)
Israel braced for fight over Jewish settlements Israel is bracing itself for a potentially violent confrontation with its Right-wing fringe after Jewish settlers openly defied government orders to halt construction in the occupied West Bank for a third day on Thursday. Stepping up a campaign of disruption, hundreds of women and children blockading several Israeli settlements successfully prevented police and government inspectors searching for unauthorised construction. Facing the prospect of having to order Israeli security services to turn on their fellow countrymen, Benjamin Netanyahu, the country's prime minister, met settler leaders yesterday to make an impassioned plea for restraint. During a tense two hour meeting in Tel Aviv, Mr Netanyahu urged his guests to stop building and co-operate, saying: "You have the right to demonstrate. You have the right to protest. You have the right to express an opinion, but it's unacceptable not to respect a decision that was taken by law." But with settler leaders enraged by what they see as Mr Netanyahu's capitulation to American pressure, there was little to suggest that his calls would be heeded. Daily Telegraph, December 3, 2009 EVENT COMMENT Sound the alarm in Judah, broadcast the news in Jerusalem. Say, 'Blow the ram's horn trumpet through the land!' Shout out—a bullhorn bellow!— 'Close ranks! Run for your lives to the shelters!' Send up a flare warning Zion: 'Not a minute to lose! Don't sit on your hands!' Disaster's descending from the north. BIBLE QUOTE (Jeremiah 4:5 NIV) Israel might soon not only be facing conflict with its enemies but possibly its own people as well. Netanyahu under enormous pressure from America has promised to stop all building in the West Bank. However, the so-called “settlers” have vowed to continue. This is land given to us by God they say. And they are right. We really could be on the brink of Israel facing conflict on all sides. As one Jerusalem city councillor said this week, “We have reached the last moment when it is still possible to divide and share Jerusalem. If decisive action does not happen this year, it will become impossible to implement any plan like the two-state solution."
