1 MetalMAX ManualManufacturing Laboratories, Inc., © 2008TXF-1 Choosing and Configuring Hammer  Hammers can be reconfigured  Tip hardness can be changed  Two primary tips  White Plastic  Brass  Calibration Data valid for all tips.  Extenders (masses) can add impulsive force to hammers. Extenders 086D80 (left), 086C04 (middle), 086D05 (right)

2 MetalMAX ManualManufacturing Laboratories, Inc., © 2008TXF-2 Rules of Thumb for Hammers  Add mass and/or soften tip to improve low frequency excitation.  Used for long and/or heavy cutters (e.g. 32 mm [1.25”] diameter 125 [5”] long end mill)  Smaller hammer and/or harder tip to improve high frequency excitation.  Used for short and/or light cutters (e.g. 12.7 mm [½”] diameter 30 mm [1.2”] long cutter)  SM Hammer 086D80  16 mm (5/8") diameter and less, thin wall parts.  MD Hammer 086C04 or C03  10-100 mm (3/8"-4") diameter cutter, medium size parts and fixturing.  LG Hammer 086D05  >50 mm (> 2") diameter cutters, machine structures, tables, tombstones, etc.

3 MetalMAX ManualManufacturing Laboratories, Inc., © 2008TXF-3 Accels 352C23 (lightest, 0.3g and least sensitive)352A21 (light, 0.8g and 2X more sensitive) 352C68 (2.0 g and 10X more sensitive) 393A03 (heaviest, 27 g and 10X more sensitive) From lightest to heaviest there is a 200 times range in sensitivity.

4 MetalMAX ManualManufacturing Laboratories, Inc., © 2008TXF-4 Choosing and Configuring Accels.  Sensitivity  Larger accels more sensitive.  Need less sensitive accels for more flexible measurements.  Mass loading  Larger accels will more likely affect frequency results (lower frequency).  Try to use smallest possible accel. Without sacrificing sensitivity.  Overlap in applications  Typical Applications  SM Accel 352C23  Used for end mills 16 mm (5/8") in diameter and smaller.  MD Accel 352A21  Used for end mill from 10-80 mm (3/8"-3") in diameter.  LG Accel 352C68  Used for indexable or facemills 50 mm (2") and larger and some machine structure measurements.  XLG Accel 393A03  Used for largest cutters 100 mm (4") and larger and machine structures, tombstones, spindle housing, etc.
