Natural Products Favorable In Pregnancy Raspberry Rubus idaeus The red berries are delicious when eaten fresh or made into jam or syrup. The leaves contain calcium, magnesium, and iron, and relieve diarrhea and nausea. This is one of the best herbs for women to take -- often used during pregnancy to relieve morning sickness, to strengthen uterine muscles for labor, and to slow bleeding after birth. Raspberry also increases breast milk.
Natural Products Favorable In Pregnancy Chamomile Matricaria chamomilla This is an excellent, gentle herb to drink for its calming effect on children and adults. It is also used to relieve indigestion, gas, and diarrhea. Drink in the evening to relax and bring on sleep. Use on sores, rashes, scaly skin, sunburn, and, to soften skin and reduce wrinkles. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory properties for use on sprains, and sore muscles.
Natural Products Favorable In Pregnancy Lavender Lavandula officinalis These very aromatic purple flowers, which grow on terminal spikes, are gathered just before opening and used to relieve headaches, depression, exhaustion, and to promote relaxation and sleep. They are also used in herbal body care and aromatherapy for sachets and sleep pillows; relaxing baths; antiseptic face washes, steams, and toners; creams and oils to relieve aches and pains.
Natural Products Favorable In Pregnancy Rose: Rosa is the familiar flower with the wonderful aromatic smell. Roses are known to hydrate the skin and are wonderful to use for a face wash, steams and herbal baths. Put the flower petals on cuts to stop bleeding. Rose hips are the seed pods that form after the bloom falls off. The hips are very high in Vitamin C. Make a tea to relieve cold symptoms, or puree into a syrup or jelly mixed with apple sauce. Rose hip oil helps prevent scarring.
Natural Products Favorable In Pregnancy Lemon Balm :Melissa officinalis is a member of the mint family with a wonderful lemony smell. It helps calm anxiety, alleviate depression, insomnia and headaches, reduce fevers and gently treats nervous tension and indigestion.
Natural Products Favorable In Pregnancy Marshmallow Althaea officinalis The young leaves can be eaten raw or slightly cooked; it makes an excellent soup thickener. The roots can be used as a meringue substitute when covered with water and boiled until reduced by half, cooled, and beaten to a froth. Mallow softens skin and soothes skin irritations, boils, stings, and runny sores. The tea is soothing to mucus membranes, swollen glands, and irritations of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary tract.
Natural Products Unfavorable In Pregnancy Comfrey Symphytum officinale This is a good plant to have around to wrap on sprains, torn ligaments, and cartilage. Its nickname is "knitbone," as it quickly heals wounds and prevents scarring after a wound is closed and free of infection. Note: for external use only.
Natural Products Unfavorable In Pregnancy Parsley should not be consumed as a drug or supplement by pregnant women. Parsley as an oil, root, leaf, or seed could lead to uterine stimulation and preterm labor.
Natural Products Unfavorable In Pregnancy Sage (Salvia officinalis) The leaves in early flowering stage is used to soothe a sore throat. Use for a mouthwash on bleeding gums. It reduces secretions such as sweating, hot flashes, and breast milk. Do not use during pregnancy.
Natural Products Unfavorable In Pregnancy Motherwort Leonurus cardiaca It is used to relieve anxiety and calm emotional ups and downs. Take Motherwort to calm heart palpitations and reduce night sweats. This herb can bring on delayed menses and promote menstrual bleeding so avoid it if experiencing menstrual flooding. Not for use during pregnancy.
Natural Products Unfavorable In Pregnancy Black CohoshCimicifuga racemosa The root can be used to relieve menstrual cramps and back pain. It contains a pytoestrogen, it has estrogenic effects on the body and is used to reduce hot flashes and other menopausal discomforts. Black Cohosh, along with Blue Cohosh, stimulates the uterus to bring on labor and strengthen contractions. Not for use before the last 2 weeks of pregnancy.
Natural Products Unfavorable In Pregnancy Blue Cohosh Caulophylum thalictroides The root is used to ripen the cervix and initiate childbirth by stimulating and strengthening contractions. It also eases exhaustion during labor and helps the uterus to expel the placenta after birth. Do not use before the last 2 weeks of pregnancy. It can also lower blood pressure.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Fenugreek Trigonella foenum-graecum The seeds are mucilaginous when cooked and smell like maple syrup. Externally, they can be used as a poultice on wounds and sores. Drinking tea made with the seeds aids digestion, and gargling with the tea relieves a sore throat. The seeds are also known for increasing breast milk. Fenugreek is a popular spice in East Indian cooking. Not for use during pregnancy; can reduce blood sugar levels.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Fennel Foeniculum vulgare This digestive herb relieves heartburn, gas, colic, and an upset stomach. The fruits can be chewed to sweeten breath and help a toothache, and a gargle will relieve a sore throat. Fennel also increases breast milk. To use as a compress, put crushed fruits in hot water for relief of swollen, tender, nursing breasts.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Alfalfa Medicago sativa Alfalfa is rich in chlorophyll and vitamin K, which promotes clotting. The leaves and flowers make a mild tasting, nutritious tea that stimulates the appetite, aids digestion, and increases breast milk. The seeds can be sprouted to add to salads and sandwiches.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Nettle Urtica dioica Nettle is an herb worth using on a regular basis. This spring tonic is loaded with nutrition and strengthens many body systems. Nettle is a rich source of iron, calcium and folic acid, and supports the kidney and adrenals. It helps clear up anemia, skin problems, and increases breast milk. A nettle hair rinse stimulates growth and removes dandruff.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Oat Avena sativa Oatmeal is a wonderful food, easy to digest, and helpful for relieving chronic constipation and colitis. Rich in magnesium, take oats to nourish the nerves, recover from nervous exhaustion, and bring on a feeling of calmness and clear thinking. It strengthens hair, nails, and bones. In a bath, it relieves itching, dry skin, and chicken pox.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Blessed Thistle Cnicus benedictus has fuzzy leaves and stems with yellow flowers. It is a "bitter" that aids digestion and works on a congested liver. It increases breast milk and is an emotional ally to uplift spirits. Not for use during pregnancy.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Goat's Rue Galega officinalis The leaves stimulate development of mammary tissue, and it is one of the most potent herbs to increase breast milk. Goat's Rue is also used to increase breast size in non-lactating women. It also increases sweating to bring down a fever. Because it can lower blood sugar levels, it can be useful for diabetics who are not on insulin.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Crampbark Viburnum opulus is a shrub with lobed leaves and round, white flower clusters that give it the common name of "snowball bush." The bark is used to relieve uterine cramping during menses, premature labor, and after birth.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Calendula Calendula officinalis This herb is an all purpose skin healing herb used to stop bleeding, wash wounds, heal cuts, abscesses, rashes, boils, chapped skin, and eczema. It relieves muscle cramps, painful swellings, hemorrhoids, and insect bites. It can be used in a footbath on swollen feet and as an eyewash on sore, tired eyes. A hair rinse reduces dandruff. The orange and yellow petals of this edible flower are a colorful addition to salads.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Dandelion Taraxacum officinale The entire plant is edible. Before it blooms eat the young greens, which are high in vitamin A, steamed or in a salad. Add flower petals to flours and batters, and/or make tea or syrup. Soak small pieces of the flower stalk in equal parts of water and vinegar overnight for pickles. Dry the root and roast in a slow oven until brown, grind and simmer 10 minutes for a drink likened to coffee. Eat the boiled roots for a vegetable. Dandelion leaf tea, is high in potassium and makes a good diuretic for treating fluid retention. Dandelion root is an excellent cleansing herb for the stomach and liver. It is high in iron and calcium, increases digestion and helps prevent constipation. It has also been recommended for jaundice, anemia, and skin blemishes. The entire plant is so beneficial that we should all keep a place for it in our gardens!
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Shepherd's Purse Capsella bursa- pastoris The leaves are high in Vitamin K. An extract made with the fresh plant is one of the best remedies for stopping bleeding — in particular, nosebleeds, excess menses, and postpartum hemorrhaging.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Uva Ursi, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi The astringent leaves reduce pain and bleeding on a cut after birth, uva ursi reduces swelling, hemorrhoids, and slows bleeding. It is one of the best herbs for clearing up urinary tract infections, but should only be used short term as it is irritating to the mucus membranes of the uterine lining and bladder.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Witch hazelHamamelis virginiana Witch hazel leaves and bark contain astringent tannins which stop internal and external bleeding. Both the bark and leaves are used to treat hemorrhoids, varicose veins, swelling and bruises, and sore nipples. Internally it stops diarrhea, vaginal discharge and excess menses. Witch hazel is an ingredient found in eye drops and many skin ointments.
Natural Products Favorable For Nursing Mothers Yarrow Achillea millefolium Put the leaves or flowers on wounds or a bloody nose to quickly stop the bleeding. Use a wash on rashes, runny sores, boils, chapped or cracked skin, and hemorrhoids. Drink to relieve indigestion and gas. Yarrow promotes sweating when taken to reduce a fever. It is also said that the smell repels mosquitoes.
Nipple Cream Use on sore, cracked nursing nipples to quickly soften and heal skin, and relieve pain. This creamy salve goes on easily and also serves as an excellent diaper rash ointment. All ingredients are safe for ingestion, so it does not need to be washed off prior to nursing. Natural Products Favorable For Newborn Infants MyrrhCommiphora Myrrha is an oleogum resin that has been used since ancient times. Myrrh constituents are antibacterial and antifungal, exhibiting activity against e.coli, staphylococcus, and candida albicans, an overgrowth of which leads to yeast infections. Its antiseptic and disinfectant properties make it useful as a wash on cuts, burns and skin infections. Gargle several drops of tincture in water to relieve a sore throat. Use diluted myrrh as a mouth wash or apply the powder on the mucus membranes inside of the mouth to treat mouth sores.

Natural Products Unfavorable For Newborn Infants Anise & Fennel: The volatile oils of these fruits contain estragol and methyl eugenol which have been shown in animal experiment to have a carcinogenic and genotoxic effects. It is advisable not to give babies and newborn infants for a prolonged period of time preparations containing anise and fennel.
