2 What Are Adaptations? Adaptations are traits that help an organism survive in its environment A CAMEL They have a hump that stores fat for times when food is not available. They can close their nostrils to keep out sand!!!

3 What Are Adaptations? KANGAROO RAT FENNEC FOX
Never have to drink water. They have the ability to convert the dry seeds they eat into water. FENNEC FOX Have large ears that give off heat and thin fur for the hot desert climate.

4 What Are Types of Adaptations of Animals?
Behaviors Hibernation We usually think of sleeping. Actually, during hibernation the animal’s body activities slow down and it lives off its body fat. Migration We usually think of ducks that fly south for the winter. Actually, to migrate is to change locations on a regular basis.

Camouflage Mimicry When an animal’s fur changes color to blend in with its environment. When one kind of living thing looks like another kind of living thing. Hover Fly Bumble Bee Coat in summer Coat in Winter ARCTIC FOX Hover Fly and a Bumble Bee

6 What Are Types of Adaptations of Animals?
Defenses Locomotion Animals have defenses that they use to protect or defend themselves Some animals have a structure for locomotion, such as wings, to move from place to place, and sometimes to flee from predators. Hedgehog has spines to defend itself Some snakes have venomous fangs.

7 Let’s PREDICT Suppose you moved a polar bear to a rain forest. How might the bear survive there? Can he adapt?
