59th Annual Chicago Public Schools Student Science Fair Winners
The following four students have been selected to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair held May 10-15, 2009 in Reno, Nevada.
Leah Balay-Wilson, a sophomore at Lincoln Park HS, Area 19, Fractal Complexity of Irradiated Tissues, Summary: She developed a fractal-based analysis tool for quantifying the breast densities associated with breast abnormalities.
Brian Castro, a senior at Chicago Ag. HS, Area 24, Determination of Voluntary Food Intake, Average Daily Gain, and Feed Efficiency of Yearling Standard Breeds Fed a Completely Pelleted Diet, Summary: To determine what horses will eat when given a choice as compared to recommended nutrition values. Growth rates for the horses on different diets were also compared.
Terrence George, a senior at Lincoln Park HS, Area 19, Imaging Mitochondrial Ca2++ Dynamics, Summary: Monitoring mitochondrial Ca2++ to understand the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in diabetes.
Mengyi Xu, a junior at Lincoln Park HS, Area 19, MicroRNAs and Their Expresion in Leukemia, Summary: This study examines the role of microRNAs in leukemogenesis through their expressions and those of their target-genes.
