“The fact that a nigger got the goal makes it ten times worse #gobacktoafrica” -Kevin Hall (@Khall1013) “Stupid nigger go play basketball hockey is a white sport”- Zack Vanasse (@zvanasse30) “#bruins just got beat by a nigger I thought hockey was a white mans game #wtf ward” – Jeffery Crispo (@CrispoCream)
"It doesn't faze me at all, we won, and we are moving on. … People are going to say what they want to say."
Ward says he never has before experienced any racist remarks directed toward him at the NHL level "Growing up, at a few minor tournaments, you catch a few kids saying things," Ward said. "But at that age, I didn't even know what the terminology meant.”
"The racially charged comments distributed via digital media following last night's game were ignorant and unacceptable. The people responsible for these comments have no place associating themselves with our game."
Racism isn’t new in sports, though many people think it is no longer a problem “I don’t let it bother me at all,” Ward said, “It’s a few people that just made a couple of terrible comments, and what can you do? I know what I signed up for. I’m a black guy playing a predominantly white sport. It’s just going to come with the territory. I’d feel naive or foolish to think that it doesn’t exist. It’s a battle I think will always be there.”
