The crust is the outermost part of the earth consisting of the continental crust and the oceanic crust. The continental crust forms continents that is mostly made of granite and is the land that we live on. The oceanic crust is the crust underwater consisting of mainly basalt. Basalt is dark, dense igneous` rock produced by heat like lava flow The crust is 5-70 km (about 45-630 football fields) thick. You can find rocks, mountains, soil and water. The crust is like a paper-thin skin of an onion. Layer 1: The Crust 2

The mantle is a layer of hot rock, but is solid. The two main layers of the mantle are the lithosphere and the asthenosphere. The lithosphere is the uppermost part of the mantle and is rigid. The asthenosphere is the soft layer of the mantle that can bend like plastic but is still solid. The mantle is 2,867 km thick (about 26 thousand football fields) and is in between the crust and outer core. Layer 2:The mantle 3

The outer core is a layer of molten material that surrounds the inner core. The outer core is 2,266 km thick (about 20 thousand football fields) and is amazing that it is a liquid even with all of the pressure and heat on top of it. The outer core is about 4,400 Celsius- 6,100 Celsius and is made up of iron and nickel. Scientists think that movements in the outer core create Earth’s magnetic field. Layer 3:The outer core 4

The inner core is a dense ball of solid metal. It is the deepest layer in Earth. In the inner core, extreme pressure squeezes the atoms of iron and nickel so much that they can’t spread to become liquid. The inner core is a solid and is 1,216 km (about 11 thousand football fields) thick so even though it is the deepest it is not the thickest(the mantle is the thickest layer). Geologists know that the inner core is solid because their indirect evidence of studying Earth’s interior, seismic waves cannot pass through it. Layer 4: The inner Core 5

Taking a journey to the center of the Earth would be scary if you didn’t have the equipment but if you did I think it would be fun and interesting. I learned that just because that temperature goes up doesn’t mean that the layers get thicker. For example, the inner core is the hottest but it is not the thickest. I bet that if you could explore more you could find many more unexpected surprises that the Earth has. I had fun doing this project and also learned a lot from exploring Earth’s different layers.
