TYLER PARK VOCAB

FIELD STUDY The chance to physically DO and SEE the things that we’ve learned about!

BIOTIC All the LIVING things in an ecosystem. “BIO” means life

ABIOTIC All of the NON-LIVING things in an ecosystem “a” means without

pH How acidic or basic something is on a scale of 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very basic)

pH scale

How do we test for pH?

Nitrates/Phosphates Types of water pollution that encourage the growth of algae & can lead to a reduction of the amount of oxygen available in the water

Dissolved Oxygen The amount of oxygen found in water Remember that all animals need oxygen to live

Velocity Another word for speed Velocity = distance time

Turbidity The amount of particles that are suspended in the water How clear the water is

Turbidity can have many negative effects on aquatic life. The suspended sediments can block light to aquatic plants, smother aquatic organisms, and carry contaminants and pathogens, such as lead, mercury, and bacteria.

Succession The process of a grassy meadow slowly becoming a forest

Biodiversity The variety of all forms of life in an area (The # of different organisms in an ecosystem)
