Origins When: 1517 Who: Martin Luther –German monk and professor –“Father of the Reformation” Where: Germany (Holy Roman Empire) and Scandinavia –Stemmed off from Catholic from influence of the Holy Roman Empire
5 Things They Believe 1.God is three in one (triune) 2.The Son of God became human and died for: ●Forgiveness of sins ●Eternal life of his people 1.Peoples’ works≠salvation, God’s grace=salvation (Lutheran Phrase: “Grace alone!”) 2.Beliefs = holy scriptures (Phrase: “Scripture alone!”) 3.Trust in Jesus is necessary for salvation (Phrase: “Faith alone!”)
What Type of Religion is it? Universal –Goal of religion is to be globally spread Autonomous –Churches, worship, etc. are organized individually/in small groups –No absolute head
Diffusion Over Time ● Spread because beliefs were ideal to people: flexible structure, easy to practice ● Became “folk” religion in parts of Germany and Scandinavia ● Spread through emigration: missionaries, colonization ex. famous missionary- Albert Schweitzer: came up with theories about religion and Jesus : origin of Lutheranism
