5 DOW’s lack of ownership Shortly after the gas leak the CEO of Union Carbide Warren Anderson left India and returned to the U.S despite being asked repeatedly in the last 20 years to return to India to face charges of multiple homicide he has failed to comply In 2001 dow chemicals took ownership over Union Carbide however dow refuses to accept any responsibility for the Bhopal tragedy None of the 6 safety systems were operational on the night of the tragedy due to ‘economic’ cuts The site has never been properly cleaned up and continues to leak toxic substances Dow continues to withhold information on the toxic effect of MIC hampering treatment 50,000 are thought to still being affected by the disaster due to illnesses, disabilities and diseases they sustained as a result. Many of these people cannot afford to pay for health care and ucc only awarded some $500 in compensation (enough to pay for 5 years health care BUT its 30 years later
