Thesis The Vietnam war was an overwhelming conflict that has had very negative affects and connotations in history Many countries and organizations around the world have had to deal with numerous problems as a result of what some might say a meaningless war

Aftermath in America The Vietnam war was fought thousands of miles away from America however every citizen was affected The war had divided the country into hawks and doves, people for the war and people against it. The war had even lead to President Johnson refusing to run for a second term because the credibility gap had damaged his reputation (The Americans Textbook).

Aftermath in Vietnam In 1975 Vietnam had completely fallen to communism, and the north took over the south in the fall of Saigon Many people protested the communism that was taking root, many new programs only hurt the public and didn’t help at all. On top of all this the government single handedly killed over half a million people who tried to escape the country at that time

Aftermath in Cambodia Just because American involvement ended in Vietnam dosen’t mean all problems were solved Tensions between the Socialist republic of Vietnam and Democratic Kampuchea resulted in an attack on Vietnam in 1977 which was of course followed by the vietnamese This whole conflict led to genocide and fighting in numerous territories in Cambodia and Vietnam and damaged Vietnam’s already war ravaged country

Aftermath in Soviet Union The Soviet Union was more of a advising force in Vietnam giving them large amounts of money and dispatching a small number of troops Although they preferred not to get their hands dirty they came out on top as Vietnam became communist

Quote 1 “The Vietnam War was arguably the most traumatic experience for the United States in the twentieth century. That is indeed a grim distinction in a span that included two world wars, the assassinations of two presidents and the resignation of another, the Great Depression, the Cold War, racial unrest, and the drug and crime waves( Brainy Quote).’’ A quote such as this goes to show how the Vietnam war war simply a horrible time in the history of the United States given all of the horrific events that had also occurred in the century

Quote 2 “No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now( shmoop.com).” Going back to the topic of Vietnam war legacy from an American perspective our viewpoint is so distorted because when it was happening a huge credebility gap had opened between the Johnson administration and the public

Quote 3 Television brought the brutality of war into the comfort of the living room. Vietnam was lost in the living rooms of America -- not on the battlefields of Vietnam (notable- quotes.com). The Vietnam war was one that had single handedly shifted the power from the battlefield to the tv screen, on the six o clock news people grew to distrust officials in America

Quote 4 Couldn't be happier that President Bush has stood up for having served in the National Guard, because I can finally put an end to all those who questioned my motives for enlisting in the Army Reserve at the height of the Vietnam War (Brainy Quote). As not listed before soldiers had to deal with hardships other than combat facing fire from the country as they returned home. Some needed motivation.

Paraphrases “One day, my fellow citizens, there will be peace in Southeast Asia.” Lyndon B Johnson said this in his 1968 address to the nation letting each and every single person know that he saw a light at the end of the tunnel but he wouldn’t be leading the American people anymore

Johnson “We fight because we must fight if we are to live in a world where every country can shape its own destiny. And only in such a world will our own freedom be finally secure.” In 1965 the situation was arguably different for the Johnson administration. His sights were set high and the whole country was backing the decision little did he know however Vietnam would test him to the end

Nixon “The American people cannot and should not be asked to support a policy which involves the overriding issues of war and peace unless they know the truth about that policy (VietnamWar.net).” President Richard Nixon was overly sympathetic and had a change of things on the war. He wanted to get our soldiers out ASAP and helped the public heal after being lied to by the Johnson Administration/
