3 Moso Bamboo Phyllostachys Edulis is the largest, temperate (75 ft. tall and 7 in thick), timber bamboo that grows in the U.S.A. It is best suited for the warm southeastern U.S. Its culm (cane/stem) sheath is very dark, spotted and hairy and easy to recognize. The plant has extremely large culms and tiny delicate leaves. New shoots emerge very early in the spring so it cannot be cultivated in cold zones.

4 What is a Bamboo Clump? A bamboo clump is a grouping of many genetic identical culms (stems) of the same species united by a network of underground rhizomes. These culms have been generated through the continuous process of natural rhizome propagating. A young clump consists of stems with different diameters, growing larger and taller each year until new stems reach the average size defined by the genetics of the species. The formation of a bamboo clump is the result of a small seedling that initiates the natural process of generating several new stems through their rhizomes. These new stems always emerge with greater diameters and heights than the previous mother stem. So for example, a 30cm tall seedling with a 2mm diameter stem will produce new stems of 3mm in diameter, those stems in turn produce several of 5mm, they then produce stems of 1cm, 2cm, 4cm, and so on, until finally stems with over 10cm in diameter and 20m high occur. This schematic cross-sectional view shows the development of a bamboo clump. The older stems are located at the center of the clump and have smaller diameters and height. The youngest stems are found towards the periphery of the clump and have the greatest diameters and height. 5 Guadua Guadua is the most important American bamboo. Due to its quality, the genus has been widely used for house construction along the inter- Andean rivers of Colombia and in coastal Ecuador. Tropical bamboo can be propagated with cuttings or by covering complete culms with soil. The next year, new plants will sprout. Or, Guadua can be propagated more rapidly by the chusquin method. Under this method, culms are cut at ground level when harvesting causing many small shoots and new plants to grow around the original plant. This method is suitable for large-scale forests or farm cooperatives. Bamboo is a grass. Harvesting it down to the soil induces more new shoots to emerge, just like turf grass. This is a phenomenon not known in hardwood forests. Even more rapid methods have been developed through the use of tissue culture. Bamboo propagated in a laboratory in the space of one square meter will be sufficient to establish one hectare of new forest. These plants can also be readily transported in a one-half-cubic-meter box. Harvesting can begin six years after planting, making bamboo a potential source of tropical biomass production for industry. Guadua is the preferred bamboo species for architectural purposes, Its diameter is constant for the first 15 meters and then tapers to the top. (60 to 100 feet tall and 4 to 8 inches in diameter.) Plants of all ages, worldwide, of the same variety, will flower at same time. Bamboo When I lived in Honduras, I learned a useless lesson. Alcoholic beverages are universal. The local people always find a way. Our colonization project had a market for over production of rice. The local brewery imported corn flakes to make beer but they agreed to buy rice for US$8.00 per 100 pound bag should our project overload the local rice market. In the U.S.A, the government was subsidizing rice production at $8.00 per 100 pounds (1956). Beer was too expensive for the poor, so they made chicha. The simple recipe: A layer of burlap, a layer of corn; a layer of burlap, a layer of corn; and repeated until no more corn. The pile was dampened with water to germinate the corn After germination, a mixture of the corn, native brown sugar, and water was poured into each section of bamboo stalks (culms) and plugged. This container held the contents during fermentation. After four days, a delicious, slightly fermented drink similar to slightly fermented apple cider was ready. After 10 days, the final product was more like hard cider. I did not like the taste but the natives sure did. The fermented final product was not distilled, but the taste of Tropical Bamboo Bourbon probably would be better than “ white lightning. ” For many, this is a valuable use for bamboo.

12 Air Lift Pumps Glenn Martinez, Hawaii Dig a well or reservoir that is sealed at the bottom. We find 4 to eight feet is great. It takes 1/2 psi per foot of depth to get the air lift started. After the air is displacing the water, the water is lighter and it takes less air. A 5 psi pump is the strongest we have ever used - 5 psi will inject air into the system at a depth of 10 feet. Dig the well four feet deep, pump the water up 8 feet, add another air injector. At the top, you MUST have an air/water separator to get the value of the pump. Generally, I use two 60 watt pumps for a 150 gallon per hour flow. Note: I am pumping very dirty water that would never pass through a mechanical submersible pond pump for very long. 13 Small Bubble Diffuser Air Pump This unit tested small bubble diffuser (B) for volume of water and energy required as well as using flexible tubing for air delivery, which is cheaper for growers. Growers suggest lift pipes be smaller than three inches. Deeper submergence increases lift. 14 Geyser Pump A geyser pump is an improved airlift pump, powered by compressed air that raises a fluid, often dirty, by forcing large, intermittent air bubbles to raise the fluid. 50. 15 Principle of Geyser Pump Unlike an airlift pump, the air bubble is produced in a chamber outside the pump riser. Air is supplied to an airtight dome with the pump riser extending through its center. Inside this dome is a second, smaller, inverted air dome, with the pump riser also extending through its center. An entrance is provided to the riser pipe capable of allowing a bubble greater than the diameter of the pipe to enter. As air is applied to the large dome, pressure inside the dome increases until it is greater than the pressure of the column of water in the pump riser. When this condition is met, a large bubble is released from the air dome into the pump riser within 1/5 second. This large bubble ejects the water in the riser, geyser fashion. By producing the bubble outside the riser, it is possible to control the rate it is produced. Controlling bubble formation speed controls how often a bubble is released into the riser. Geyser Pumps can operate with flow rate as low as 1 gal min (4 l/min). A 3-inch, bubble airlift pump cannot operate with a flow rate much less than 35 gals / min. 20 Red Wriggle Worms are composting earthworms that create looseness in the soil and consume the solids among the roots in gardens and in the grow beds of an aquaponics system. A normally populated fish tank (not over crowded) in a family systems, probably will not need any mechanical filters (swirl filters, radial filters, or bio-filters). Worms multiply rapidly as long as sufficient solids are available to sustain their population. One grower said he had to clean his wormless grow beds every 15 months; another using worms said he cleaned his grow beds every five years.
