Family DasypodidaeDasypodidae Range- Central US through Central South America 20 species 8 genera Characteristic bony scutes covered in keratinous plates

Bony Scutes

Characteristics 3-5 Digits Long, curved claws Strongly built pelvis Ossified rib cage Limb bones have many processes and attachment points for muscles

Behavior and Diet Solitary or in pairs May travel in small groups Primarily insectivorous May also consume carrion, small vertebrates, or plant material

Subfamily: Dasypodinae Subfamily: Dasypodinae (long-nosed armadillos)

Subfamily Euphractinae (fairy armadillos and pichiciegos)

Subfamily Tolypeutinae (naked-tailed, giant, and three-banded armadillos)

Iron Supplementation Experiment Armadillos were captured from Brazil Iron sulfate was diluted and mixed into the feed, about 10mg/day for 50 days Blood samples were taken before and after using a chemical immobilization technique Behavior was monitored before and after the experiment

Iron Supplementation Experiment It was found that behavior and appearance did not change Hemetological levels improved with iron supplementation in all cases significantly Purpose: to understand iron requirements of captive armadillo populations for zoological and research purposes Rosa, Pinke, Pedrini, Silva

Armadillo-Leprosy Study Leprosy and control patients were interviewed with a questionnaire. Asked if they ever had contact with armadillos Found that 68% leprosy cases had contact with armadillos. Found that 48% leprosy cases had contact with armadillos. Deemed that armadillo contact doubled the risk of contracting leprosy in Brazil Deps, Alves, Gripp, Aragao, Guedes, Filho, Andreatta, Marcari, Prates, Rodrigues
