INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON PUBLIC EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH FOR CARBON CAPTURE, UTILIZATION, AND STORAGE Decatur, Illinois Meade Harris – Senior Advisor Capacity Development & Public Engagement, The Americas, The Global CCS Institute Wednesday, July 30, 2014

Why education and outreach? “…We could never have dreamed when we began this unit that parents who live in the area would be coming to the school wanting to know more because their children had come home, excited to tell them all about Carbon Storage.” Michael Grove, Assistant Principal, St Anne’s Harvey, WA BUILD TEACHER CONFIDENCE “Of the vast number of energy technologies available to the teaching profession to discuss with students, CCS is one of the least cited technologies.” Dowd and Jeanneret. (2011) Energy Procedia/GHG11 IMPROVE UNDERSTANDING “Many members of the public still require basic information on climate change, CCS, and their relationship to CO 2 emissions.” Itaoka et al. (2010, p10). ENGAGE STUDENTS AND PARENTS “I firmly believe the CCS and CarbonKids Program has awoken a passion for Science in many of our students and teachers…”

Education at the Institute CarbonKids Program Australian education program developed and delivered with CSIRO Curriculum Resources Introduction to carbon capture and storage NEW: Energy in a low-carbon future Workshop material Interactive presentations Hands-on CCS Experiments Developing supportive resources – certificates/ posters/ invitations etc Challenge events National CCS Week Science Communication Challenge Game development The International CO 2 Degrees Challenge Project outreach resources Hontomin Project’s bilingual – Cooking with CO 2 and CO 2 Do I Know You resources Supporting international development CO 2 Degrees website CO 2 Degrees Education Extranet

Curriculum resources INTRODUCTION TO CCS Primary and secondary level resources with teacher support notes Peer reviewed by scientists and educators Trialled in classrooms in Australia and internationally Inquiry based learning methodology Mapped to the Australian curriculum – but can be adapted Provides cross curricula activities, primarily focused on CCS ENERGY IN A LOW-CARBON FUTURE Primary and secondary level resources with teacher support notes Peer reviewed by scientists and educators Inquiry based learning methodology Created in accordance with UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development Framework Modular resource designed to be integrated with local curriculum or used as stand alone units for workshops/ science clubs. Provides cross curricula activities across the following topics: 1.What is Energy? 2.The Evolution of Energy 3.Energy Systems 4.Climate Change and Greenhouse Gases 5. Low-Carbon Future

Australia - CarbonKids  CSIRO led climate change and sustainability education program for Primary and Junior High School  Active in over 255 Australian schools  Partnered with the Institute to include the ‘Introduction to CCS’ program  1 year program included:  Teacher development sessions & Classroom resources  Climate Change and CCS Workshops with CSIRO Scientists and Institute staff  Hands-on science experiment kit - 11 kitchen cupboard experiments  Interschool Challenge events- fajm7-e8 fajm7-e8
