2The sacrament of Confirmation completes the initiation of a baptized Christian. To be confirmed, one must be baptizedWe renew our baptismal promises at Confirmation.

4Rite of ConfirmationLiturgy of the Word with reading of Gospel (These are taken from the Mass of the Holy Spirit)Presentation of the candidates (the pastor declares their readiness for the sacrament and presents them to the bishop)Homily (the bishop usually gives a homily on the importance of Confirmation)Promise to renounce sin and satan (usually done in a question and answer format)Profession of Faith (usually done in a question and answer format)Imposition of hands (long prayer found on p. 103 in the student text; read and discuss the prayer)Annointing and signing with the Cross (this is done individually). The bishop anoints the confirmandi with Sacred Chrism as the confirmandi and their sponsor come forward for the sacrament. The sponsor has his right hand on the right shoulder of the confirmandi. This is the matter of the sacramentPrayer “be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit” (usually a patron saint namem is taken at Confirmation.)Continuation of Mass, special blessing of the newly confirmed.
5The SponsorThe sponsor is to walk our journey of faith with us, as a guide, advisor, and friend.Often the sponsor is a godparent, but he does not need to be.The sponsor is someone who faith fully lives the Faith and can help us to do the same.
6Confirmation is a sacrament of Christian maturity. It marks the beginning of the students’ Christian adulthood.They will grow in maturity during their entire lives, but this sacrament recognizes them as being responsible for their growth in the Faith.
