A region is usually named for its landscape. Georgia’s Coastal Plain is a low flat region of sandy dirt and well drained, gently rolling hills and poorly drained flat lands. The bottom of the Coastal Plains have marshes and swamps and the coast. The top of the Coastal Plains has dry and sandy areas like a desert.
The Coastal Plain makes up the southern half of Georgia. Its right under the Piedmont and next to the Atlantic ocean. The Coastal Plains are in the southern corner of Georgia. Its connected with the Marsh & Swamps and the Coast. The Coastal Plain is split into groups the Upper Coastal Pain and the Lower Coastal Plain.
The animals that live in the Coastal Plains are armadillos, deer, wild boar, and Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake. Some other animals that live in the Coastal Plains are the Bobwhite Quail, Wild Turkey, Whitetail Deer, Bachman’s Sparrow, and the Fox Squirrel. The most common animal in the Coastal Plain is the Whitetailed Deer. The Coastal Plain has tons of rare animals but the rarest is the Pure White Deer. The Pure White Deer is a albino which means the deer is all white.
Peanut and Cotton are grown for crops in the Coastal Plains of Georgia. Live Oak tree’s grow there too. Long Leaf Pines grow there too and are used for shelter for small animals like chipmunks, squirrels, and rats. The Pine Tree is the most common plant in the Coastal Plains. Wiregrass grows quickly after a forest fire. Some birds nest in wiregrass.
The Coastal Plains is made up of gritty and sandy dirt. The dirt is very irritating to humans and dogs, cats, and other animals with fur. If you were to put the dirt in water it would get strong and durable. A long time ago the Coastal Plains was made of mostly rock and sand. When our world was created the Coastal Plain was all underwater.
1,000 years ago there where geysers. Geysers are a natural hot springs that throws out a spray of steam and water. The geysers are so hot that it can roast a chicken in seconds. There where also dinosaurs. Paleontologists found all kinds of dinosaurs like T-rex, and the Megladon.
Foreign means from another country. The foreign plant is called Kudzu. The Kudzu plant comes from Asia. The Kudzu plant is a invasive plant. Invasive plants choke out native plants that grow in the Coastal Plains naturally. The rare plant is called Plumleaf Azaleas. Plumleaf Azaleas are endemic to the Coastal Plains. They don’t grow naturally any where else in the world! One other rare plant is the Pitcher Plant. The Pitcher Plant eat insects.
Slow rivers wind through the Coastal Plains. Frogs and crayfish breed in the wetlands. A wetland is land that is covered in water all or part of the time. Georgia’s blind cave salamanders live underground. They live only in small parts of Georgia and Florida. Mussels and snails dig underground into riverbeds. These animals are very sensitive to pollution. Some animals are extinct because pollution.
Oil spills are the number one thing that is dangerous to the Coastal Plains. The oil will wash up on shore and will stick to animals. The oil will kill almost every thing in its path. Another thing that is dangerous to the Coastal Plains is pollution. Pollution has made many animals in the Coastal Plains extinct.
Did you know that the Coastal Plains have rare minerals too? One rare mineral is Hematite. Hematite makes the dirt and rock turn red. Some think its red clay. Do you like soda? Well if you do did you know that the soda can is made from a mineral called Bauxite. When they mine out the Bauxite they turn it into aluminum. Forest fires happen in the summer mostly. Forest fires aren’t really dangerous to animals because the Gopher turtle. The Gopher turtle can smell when a forest fire will come so he'll go in his borrow and other animals will go in with the Gopher turtle. Then when the Gopher turtle senses the fire is over he’ll go out and the animals will go with him.
The climate of the Coastal Plains is different. The upper Coastal Plains is humid and very sunny and hot sometimes the sand is so hot its unbearable to touch. The lower Coastal Plains is very moist and wet with its swamps and marshes. It can get so watery that the marshes and swamps are overflowed with there water.
The Coastal Plains is known for its beach and sandy shores. It is one of the most popular regions in Georgia. Its also known for its good food and drinks. The minerals are also good there. The Coastal Plains have deep and steep canyons that have lots of good mining places too.
The water sources of the Coastal Plains is the beach. The Coastal Plains also have tons of marshes and swamps. Also has a very small amount of ponds, lakes, and rivers. The Savannah river is one of the big site-seeing spots with its history
You can go to the Coastal Plains any time. The Coastal Plains are always hoping for more company.
