CO 2 and You! Sciencenter Ithaca, NY USA This project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services Copyright 2010, Sciencenter, Ithaca, NY.

Do you know what climate change is? 1. 1. Yes 2. 2. No 3. 3. A little

How much have you thought about climate change before today? 1. 1. A lot 2. 2. Some 3. 3. A little 4. 4. Not at all

Temperature Is Rising…

Feel the Greenhouse Effect

Which one of these symbols represents carbon dioxide? 1. 1. CH 4 2. 2. H 2 O 3. 3. CO 2

How much is a ton of CO 2 ? www.sustainablemilton.org

What Can I Do? Change 5 light bulbs to compact fluorescent CFLs use ¼ as much energy. If every household did this, we could cut 30 million tons of CO 2 each year.

Do you have CFL bulbs in your home? 1. 1. Yes 2. 2. No

What Can I Do? Reduce shower time to 5 min and install a low-flow shower head. If every household did this, we could cut 64 million tons of CO 2 each year.

Do you have a low-flow shower head or faucet in your home? 1. 1. Yes 2. 2. No 3. 3. Don’t know

What Can I Do? Set your thermostat to 18° C (65° F) days and 13° C (55° F) at night. If every household did this, we could cut 71 million tons of CO 2 each year.

What Can I Do? Turn off lights when not needed. If every household did this, we could cut 20 million tons of CO 2 each year.

Do you remember to turn off your lights? 1. 1. Yes 2. 2. No 3. 3. Sometimes

What Can I Do? Buy local and be a conscious consumer Eating locally grown foods reduces fossil fuels burned during preparation and transport. The average U.S household generates 8.1 tons of green house gases a year from food consumption.

What Else Can I Do? Talk to people! Let your friends know about climate change Urge business leaders and politicians to think about the environment as they make decisions

What is 350? 350.org aims to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis. 350 ppm (parts per million) is what scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We currently are at 392 ppm.
