“Almost without exception we have found in counseling that when there have been other serious problems in a marriage, there also has been the problem of husband-wife role failure, usually taking the form of role reversal.” – Jay Adams, Christian Living in the Home

“Husband” Defined: “A married man; a man who has a wife” “The English word husband, even though it is a basic kinship term, is not a native English word. It comes ultimately from the Old Norse word hūsbōndi, meaning “master of a house” “the ‘house-band,’ connecting and keeping together the whole family”

Establish his own household Establish his own household Genesis 2:24 (NKJV) 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Provide for his own household Provide for his own household 1 Timothy 5:8 (NKJV) 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Provide for his own household Provide for his own household Exodus 21:10 (NKJV) 10 If he takes another wife, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marriage rights.

Cleave to his wife. Cleave to his wife. Matthew 19:5–6 (NKJV) 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’ ? 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

To be the head of the home. To be the head of the home. Ephesians 5:22–29 (NKJV) 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.

To be the head of the home. To be the head of the home. Joshua 24:15 (NKJV) 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the L ORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the L ORD.”

To honor his wife. To honor his wife. 1 Peter 3:7 (NKJV) 7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. “Honor is the manifestation of respect.” - Unknown

To honor his wife. To honor his wife. 1 Peter 3:7 (NKJV) 7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. “…for the weaker the vessels, the greater must be the care lest they be broken” - THAYER'S GREEK LEXICON, Electronic Database. 13 To dwell with their wives with understanding. To dwell with their wives with understanding. 1 Peter 3:7 (NKJV) 7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.

To provide for her sexual needs. To provide for her sexual needs. 1 Corinthians 7:2–5 (NKJV) 2 Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. 3 Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

To provide for her spiritual needs. To provide for her spiritual needs. Ephesians 5:25 (NKJV) 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,

Lord, may there be no moment in my life When she regrets that she became my wife. Help me to do the utmost that I can To prove myself her measure of a man. Since years must bring to all their load of care, Let us together every burden bear, And when death beckons one its path along, May not the two of us be parted long! – M. D. Caruthers
