7 The Air Around Us 3 States of Matter are: Solid Liquid Gas

8 Air Around Us Air is all around us. It is in water and soil. (Ex. bubbles by fish. And worms come out when heavy rain occurs) Air takes up room. We cannot see it, but we can feel it. (Ex. Balloon) Air contains dust and water/water vapor Moving air helps us do work. It helps things float in water, it helps us suck up water, and it pushes against things Wind is fast moving air. The faster it moves the greater its force Air is colder in winter than the summer. Heated air expands and rises; cold air contracts and descends

9 Air Around Us Oxygen is an important part of air. Fire needs oxygen to burn Animals must breathe oxygen to survive Plants use the carbon dioxide and give off oxygen Air contains moisture (water) Warm air usually contains more moisture than cold air Condensation of moisture in the air results in: Clouds, fog, rain, hail, snow, dew, and frost A difference in temperature causes air to move; hot air rises and cold air descends
