Word Dissection: Chloroplast Chloro-green -plastsmall body A chloroplast is a small green body in a plant cell. (organelle)
Chloroplast Chloroplasts can move around near the surface of the cell to take advantage of how bright the sunlight is and from which direction it is coming XyLZc XyLZc ak ak
Chlorophyll Green pigment in plants Gives plants their green color Absorbs light energy from the sun Energy is used to power the process of photosynthesis -phyll - means leaf
Please write and answer in your journal: 1.What is the process of photosynthesis? 2.Summarize in your science journal your understanding of photosynthesis – including the things plants need to complete the process
Lab Preview Predict what colors may appear
Leaf Pigment Other pigments in leaves – yellows, purples, reds, and oranges The amount of green pigment called chlorophyll produced depends the amount of light the plant receives The green color chlorophyll hides the other pigments In the fall, there is less sunlight and temperatures decrease and chlorophyll is not produced. This allows other colors to show in the leaves Untamed Science – Why leaves change color Investigation Texas Parks and Wildlife
Stomata Special pores that allow the exchange of gases (CO 2, O 2 ) and releasing H 2 O (water vapor) Stomata pores are surrounded by guard cells Guard cells expand or shrink to open or close the stomata (balloon demo) Guard cells close when dehydrated. This helps conserve water for the plant Most stomata are on the bottom of the leaf
The stomata are important to the process of photosynthesis. this is the site where carbon dioxide is taken into the plant and oxygen and water vapor is released.
Photosynthesis Challenge: dissect the word and try to infer its meaning
Photosynthesis Photo- -synthesis
Photosynthesis Photo- means “light” -synthesis means “to make” “Photosynthesis” means to make with light
Please copy exactly the equation into your journal
Photosynthesis Chemical Equation Photosynthesis Song
carbon dioxide + water glucose + oxygen
Discuss answers to the questions below with your table partners 1.Why is photosynthesis important to all life on the Earth? 2.What happens when light energy from the Sun is used for the process of photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis Radiant energy from the Sun is converted into chemical energy (glucose) Plants use and store glucose Animals eat the plants and use the stored glucose for energy Oxygen produced in the process is used by animals in respiration. Carbon dioxide produced by animals is used by plants
Questions 1.What would happen if the process of photosynthesis stopped? 2.Why is photosynthesis necessary for life on the Earth to continue? 3.How do energy and matter interact in the photosynthesis process? 4.Which three types of organisms can produce their own food through photosynthesis?
