Practical 1

 By the end of the lesson you should be able to: Name the four chambers of the heart. State the position and purpose of the heart valves. Name all the blood vessels associated with the heart. Explain why one side of the heart is thicker than the other. Describe the path of blood flow through the heart and the blood vessels around it

 The human heart is a very simple but very efficient _____ beating over 100000 times a day. The four chambers, four valves and various blood vessels transport _______ into and out of the heart pump blood

 To observe, identify and describe structures of a mammalian heart

 Your teacher will either demonstrate or show you a video of how to dissect a mammalian heart.  Try to identify the following structures Blood vesselsChambersValves coronaryright atriumsemilunar aorta left atriumatrioventricular Vena cava right ventricle Pulmonary artery Pulmonary vein left ventricle

 Finds the answers to the following questions and record your answers in the results section  What is the hard cream coloured tissue on the surface of the heart?  What colour is the tissue which makes up the walls of the heart.  How many times thicker is the wall of the left ventricle than the right ventricle.  Where are the coronary blood vessels?  What is the name of the blood vessel with the thickest wall?  Which type of blood vessel has an elastic wall?  How would you describe the heart valves?  What holds the valves open?

 The hard cream coloured tissue on the surface of the heart is ___  The colour of the tissue which makes up the walls of the heart is _____  The wall of the ventricle is ________times thicker than the right ventricle  The coronary blood vessels are _____________  The blood vessel with the thickest wall is called the ____________  The type of blood vessel with an elastic wall is an ____________  Heart valves are ___________________  The heart valves are _________________________ Observations FAT red 2 to 3 On the surface of the heart Aorta Artery thin flaps of tissue held open by tendons

 What is seen and done in this experiment?  Structure of a mammalian heart are observed, identified and described

 What precautions are taken when carrying out dissections?  Gloves are worn to avoid contamination  Care is taken handling sharp instruments  Sensitivity is shown to those who find dissection distasteful
