Acid/Base Chemistry Part 4 (5.6) Science 10 CT05D06 Resource: Brown, Ford, Ryan, IB Chem

Topic 05 – Acids/Bases  5.1 Solutions  5.2 Definitions of Acids and Bases  5.3 Properties of Acids and Bases  5.4 Calculating pH, pOH, H+, OH-  5.5 Neutralization equations  5.6 Titrations

5.6 Titrations  5.6.1 Complete titration calculations  (M A x V A = M B x V B )  5.6.2 Identify the parts of a titration curve  5.6.3 Buffer action of weak acids and bases

5.6 – Titration Intro  When equal concentrations of both acid and base are neutralized the solution will contain equal volumes of each acid.  1.0M HCl + 1.0M NaOH, if neutralized, equal amounts of each are needed (ex. 10mL & 10mL)  If concentrations are different, that must be taken into account due to differing number of ions (H + and OH - in each)  5.0M HCl + 1.0M NaOH, if neutralized, you will need 5x the volume of NaOH to neutralize HCl

5.6 – Titration Equation

5.6 – Titration Example  You are to complete the titration worksheet for homework (quiz on titration and dilution next class)  Your task for the end of today is to complete a qualitative titration of HCl with NaOH  You may work in partners  Procedures and calculations must be calculated and checked off prior to beginning the lab
