A1 a Pupils reach high standards of attainment in Geography

A1a Pupils have good knowledge and understanding, appropriate for their age, of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, the Earth’s key physical and human processes and key geographical concepts such as interdependence and interconnections. Justification: The KS3 curriculum has been reviewed in order to make the curriculum appropriate for each group and to cover a good balance of physical and human processes. In each topic we cover details about peoples use of resources and particularly the idea of interdependence and interconnections. An example of changes to the curriculum at KS3 have been the introduction of topics including Crime and Conflict and the Geography of Disease to provide opportunities to consider interdependence. We have also added Rocks and Landscape to cover Geology and Tectonics laid out in the curriculum. Within the schemes of work we use enquiry questions eg. ‘Should Fracking be allowed?’ Evidence 1: Curriculum map Evidence 2: Extract from new Year 8 ‘Crime and Conflict SoW

Year 8 level-assessed work on China’s interconnections with different places in the world and possible future impacts. Evidence of pupils covering a range of human, physical and environmental geography through a focus on China. EVIDENCE 1a (A1a)

Clockwise: Inter-departmental products of Uganda Week; Biomes project display of student work; Solutions to climate change (as part of the Climate Challenge); Group research projects of students’ source countries. EVIDENCE: A1a – Students have good knowledge of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, the Earth’s key physical and human processes and key geographical concepts such as interdependence and interconnections. 1

A1a: Pupils have good knowledge and understanding, appropriate for their age, of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, the Earth’s key physical and human processes and key geographical concepts such as interdependence and interconnections. New KS3 curriculum has greater emphasis on diverse places and interdependence. GCSE and A Level students also encounter a wide range of places, environments and processes. Example case studies include China, Antarctica, Spain, Kenya, Haiti and Japan. It is common practice to discuss parallel examples in places that students themselves are familiar with, especially as each class has a wide range of different nationalities. See examples of student work on Montserrat for understanding on place, process and concepts
