Competence a) Assist with consultant-led specimen dissection appropriately. b) Take dictation at specimen dissection. c) Assist with the pinning out of specimens. d) Label cassettes accurately in order to maintain the link between sample and request. e) Transfer category A specimens from pot to cassette.

Key concepts of specimen selection What is it? How big is it? What does the cut surface look like? Is there tumour? Is it benign or malignant? Are the margins clear? Are the lymph nodes involved? Is there distant tumour?
