2 What is Ozone? O zone (O3) is an un stable form of oxygen. The word ‘ozone’ is derived from the Greek ‘ozein’ – meaning “to smell”, which is used to identify ozone because ozone’s distinctive odor. It has a pale blue color whilst liquid ozone is deep blue, strongly magnetic liquid.

3 Ozone (O3) is the trivalent (three atom) form of oxygen and is a normal trace element found in the earth’s atmosphere. It is produced form oxygen molecules (O2) excited to a higher energy level, which breaks down into atomic oxygen (O) and which reconstitutes with other molecules (O2), thus forming ozone (O3) >[ O + O2 = O3]. The ozone molecules are now in a highly active state and once they come into contact with contamination in the air, like micro-organisms, germs bacteria, virus, poisonous gas, odors etc., they ‘break-down’ and eventually eliminate the contamination. This action serves to stabilize the ozone molecules and within minutes, they revert (decompose) back to ordinary oxygen (O2) once again The ordinary oxygen molecules get energized by the UV-C rays, to form ozone molecules and the process repeats itself as long as the ozone machine unit is left ON.

4 Ozone takes roughly 25 seconds to decompose to oxygen after coming into contact with contaminations in the air. In clean air (with the absence of contaminants), ozone takes about minutes to revert back to oxygen.

5 How is ozone produce? In nature, ozone is formed photo-chemically in the earth’s upper atmosphere by the action of short-wave Ultra Violet (UV-C) rays from the sun on the oxygen present in the atmosphere. The maximum concentration of ozone occurs between 13 and 20 miles above the earth’s surface known as the ‘ozone layer’. This reaction serves the useful purpose of shielding the earth from potentially hazardous UV rays. In this sense ozone is essential for all life on the planet. Alternatively, ozone can be created in nature by high voltage electrical discharges, and can easily be recognized in the air after thunder and lighting storms.

8 OZONE EFFECTS ON SPECIFIC BACTERIA, VIRUSES AND MOLDS Bacteria are microscopically small, single-cell creatures having a primitive structure. The bacteria body is sealed by a relatively solid-cell membrane. Ozone interferes with the metabolism of bacterium-cells, most likely through inhibiting and blocking the operation of the enzymatic control system. A sufficient amount of ozone breaks through the cell membrane, and this leads to the destruction of the bacteria. Viruses are small, independent particles, built of crystals and macromolecules, Unlike bacteria, they multiply only within the host cell. They transform protein of the host cell into proteins of their own. Ozone destroys viruses by diffusing through the protein coat into the nucleic acid core, resulting in damage of the viral RNA. At higher concentrations, ozone destroys the capsid, or exterior protein shell by oxidation so DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), or RNA (ribonucleic acid) structures of the microorganism are affected.
