4.6 (M2) Solve Exponential Equations and Inequalities Performance Exam: Dec. 2 Last Unit Test: Dec. 8 EOCT: Dec. 16 (6 th ), Dec. 17 (7 th ) We will go over questions from 3.9 and 4.6 HW tomorrow
2
Vocabulary Exponential Equations: equations in which variable expressions occur as exponents. Exponential inequalities in one variable: inequalities that can be written in the form: ab x + k < 0 ab x + k > 0
3
Example 1: Solve 125 x = 25 x + 1 We want 125 and 25 to have the same base!
4
Example 2: Solve 4 x = (1/2) x – 3 by graphing x = 1
5
You Try: Solve 3 x = (1/9) x – 3 Solve 4 3x = 2 x + 1 by graphing
6
Example 3: Solve 4 3z < 8 z + 1 Just like an example 1, we want them to have the same base! Remember: when you multiply or divide by a negative it flips the inequality sign!
7
Example 4: Solve 2 2x + 1 – 1 > -0.75 by graphing x > -1.5
8
You Try: Solve 4 2x – 5 < 64 3x Solve 2 4x – 3 + 0.75 > 1 by graphing
