Tones Review / 四声复习 There are 4 tones in Mandarin, plus a neutral tone. When writing pinyin, we can represent the tones in one of two ways, either with a number or with a diacritical mark, as follows: 高 gāogao11 st tone 忙 mángmang22 nd tone 好 hǎohao33 rd tone 累 lèilei44 th tone 吗 mamaneutral (Note that neutral tone is sometimes written as ma5.)
Tones Review / 四声复习 One way of thinking about the sounds of the four tones is by using the English exclamation “man”: First tone, a high and even tone: Oh, mān, why did you do that?!?! Second tone, a rising tone, as in a question: What did you see, mán? Third tone, a flat, dipping tone: Come on, mǎn, you can do it! Fourth tone, a falling exclamation: Màn, is that hot!
Tones Review / 四声复习 Let’s remind ourselves of what each of the tones sounds like: 高 gāogao11 st tone 忙 mángmang22 nd tone 好 hǎohao33 rd tone 累 lèilei44 th tone
Tones Review / 四声复习 If we want to represent the 4 tones visually, they might look something like this:
Tones Review / 四声复习 Let’s see if we can hear the differences between the 4 tones. 1 st tone 2 nd tone 3 rd tone 4 th tone
Tones Review / 四声复习 不对。再来一遍。 Think about the shape or direction of the tone, and then think about the four pictures.
Tones Review / 四声复习 Before we look at tone combinations, let’s review tone changes. We have learned that certain tone combinations result in a change in the way they are pronounced. How are two third tones in a row pronounced? Click on the correct answer. Q1: 你好。 nǐ hǎo 1) nǐ hǎo2) nǐ háo 3) ní hǎo4) ní háo
Tones Review / 四声复习 不对。再来一遍。 Think about what would make it easier to pronounce.
Tones Review / 四声复习 Sometimes we have a string of tones together. How are three third tones in a row pronounced? Click on the correct answer. Q2: 我很好。 wǒ hěn hǎo 1) wǒ hěn hǎo2) wó hěn hǎo 3) wó hén hǎo4) wǒ hén hǎo
Tones Review / 四声复习 不对。再来一遍。 Again, think about what is going to make this combination easier to pronounce, and about the two third tones together.
Tones Review / 四声复习 Rules: When two third tones occur together, the first changes to second tone. When three third tones occur together, we have two pairs of two third tones. We can resolve both if the second one changes to second tone.
Tones Review / 四声复习 We have learned that 不 bù changes tone when followed by characters with a certain tone. How does 不 bù change when followed by another 4 th tone? Click on the correct answer. Q1: 不是。 bù shì 1) bù shì2) bú shì 3) bū shì4) bǔ shì
Tones Review / 四声复习 不对。再来一遍。 Think about what would make the combination more natural.
Tones Review / 四声复习 Rule: When 不 bù is followed by another fourth tone, it changes to a second tone. Otherwise it does not change.
Tones Review / 四声复习 We have learned that 一 yī changes depending on the tone of the character that follows it. How does 一 yī change when followed by another 1 st tone? Click on the correct answer. Q2: 一张 yī zhāng 1) yī zhāng2) yí zhāng1) yī zhāng2) yí zhāng 3) yǐ zhāng4) yì zhāng
Tones Review / 四声复习 不对。再来一遍。 This one you just have to remember.
Tones Review / 四声复习 Rules: When 一 yī is followed by a fourth tone, it changes to second tone. When 一 yī is followed by a first, second, or third tone, it changes to fourth tone. When 一 yī is used in counting, or when it occurs at the end of the word, it remains first tone.
