CONTENTS: 1.INTRODUCTION OF ELECTROMAGNET 2.THEORY OF ELECTROMAGNET 3.HOW TO MAKE AN ELECTROMAGNET 4. HOW TO MAKE ELECTROMAGNET STRONGER 5.WHICH JOBS USE ELECTROMAGNETS PRESENTED BY: PALLAVI SINGH TGT(WE)

2 1. ELECTROMAGNET Electromagnets are magnets that are created when there is electric current flowing in a wire. The simplest electromagnet uses a coil of wire, often wrapped around some iron.

3 1(a) N AND S POLE OF AN ELECTROMAGNET
The north and south poles of an electromagnet are located at each end of the coil.Which end is the north pole depends on the direction of the electric current. When your fingers curl in the direction of current, your thumb pointstoward the magnet’s north pole. This method of finding the magnetic poles is called the right hand rule . You can switch north and south by reversing the direction of the current. This is a great advantage over permanent magnets. You can’t easily change the poles of a permanent magnet.

5 2. THEORY OF ELECTROMAGNET
For a long time, people thought about electricity and magnetism as different and unrelated effects. Starting about the 18th century, scientists suspected that the two were related. As scientists began to understand electricity better, they searched for relationships between electricity and magnetism. In 1819, Hans Christian Øersted, the Danish Scientist ( ), noticed that a current in a wire caused a compass needle to deflect. He had discovered that moving electric charges create a magnetic field. Øersted was the first to identify the principle of an electromagnet.

6 3.HOW DO I MAKE AN ELECTOMAGNET
It is fairly easy to build an electromagnet. All you need to do is rap some insulated copper wire around an iron core. If you attach a battery to the wire, an electric current will begin to flow and the iron core will become magnetized. When the battery is disconnected, the iron core will lose its magnetism. Follow these steps if you would like to build the electromagnet. STEP 1 GATHER MATERIAL STEP 2 REMOVE INSULATION STEP 3 WRAP WIRE AROUND NAIL STEP 4 CONNECT TO BATTERY

7 4.HOW TO MAKE ELECTROMAGNET STRONGER
The more turns of wire will make electromagnet more stronger. 2. By passing large current through electromagnet

8 5.APPLICATION OF ELECTROMAGNET
1.ELECTRIC BELL     Important parts of an electric     bell are :     1. Electromagnet     2. Armature     3. Spring     4. Armature rod     5. Hammer     6. Gong

9 2.ELECTRIC MOTOR Many of our electrical home appliances use electromagnetism as a basic principle of working. If we take an example of an electric fan, the motor works on the principle of electromagnetic induction.

10 3. LOUDSPEAKERS The loudspeaker which we use for public announcements in meetings, or to transmit message over a long distance, is a perfect example for an electromagnetic appliance. The movement of the coil under the electromagnetic force produces sound which is heard over a very long distance.

11 Questions based on Electromagnet
Q1. What is an electromagnet? Q2. How do you make an electromagnet? Q3. Significance of an electromagnet? Q4. How you can make electromagnet more stronger? Q5. What are the applications of electromagnet?
