Terminology Organizational Partner One of the Standards Development Organizations which have signed the 3GPP Agreement, and which set general policy and jointly fund the principle costs of the Project.

Terminology Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA) The original 3 rd generation radio technology developed by 3GPP Terminology Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) Uplink and downlink use separate frequencies Terminology Time Division Duplex (TDD) Uplink and downlink share the same frequency Terminology Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) Second generation digital system developed in ETSI and subsequently transferred to 3GPP Terminology High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) High Speed Download Packet Access (HSDPA) High Speed Upload Packet Access (HSUPA) Evolution of UTRA to provide higher data rates Terminology Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) 2.75G radio technology increasing bitrates to lower bounds of 3G Terminology General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) 2.5G radio technology providing packet data Terminology LTE™ New radio technology coupled with simplified architecture yielding performance approaching 4G Terminology LTE-Advanced™ Further development of LTE offering true 4G performance Terminology Internet Protocol Multimedia core network Subsystem (IMS) Packetization of core network protocols, extending to terminals, to allow full multimedia traffic and signalling based on internet protocols

Senior officials of the OPs ordinarily meet twice a year to exercise these powers. Market Representation Partners Commercial organizations with an interest in furthering the technologies developed by 3GPP and with the capability to influence the market for such technologies. *

It sets high level policy, formally appoints elected TSG chairmen and vice-chairmen, ensuring regional balance, and – though very rarely called upon to act as arbiter of technical disputes – is the ultimate court of appeal within 3GPP.

14 © 3GPP 2009 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, 19 th February 2009© 3GPP GPP The Training Course / Module 1 14 TSG GERAN Technical Specification Group GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network Created on the closure of ETSI Technical Committee SMG in 2000, when all the GSM (2G) Specifications were transferred from ETSI to 3GPP. Responsible for maintenance and enhancement of GSM/EDGE specifications. GERAN-based systems are still the most wide-spread cellular technology in the world.

Now responsible for UTRA and HSPA LTE™ LTE-Advanced ™ and thus bridging the gap between 3G and 4G.

Responsible for the development of the fixed (“wired”) network aspects of 3GPP systems, including the Mobile Application Part (MAP) of ITU-T Signalling System No. 7, CAMEL and related Intelligent Network (IN) aspects and much more.

SA also has a coordination role to ensure that all TSGs work in harmony. However, SA is not hierarchically above the other TSGs.
