Multiplying Fractions & Mixed Numbers

Objective Multiplying mixed numbers Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Prerequisite Skill Convert the mixed fraction into improper fraction 3 1/ /6 2 2/3 - 8/3 2 ½ - 5/2 9 ½ - 19/2 2 2/5 - 12/5 Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Multiply Mixed Numbers
To multiply mixed numbers, write the mixed numbers as improper fractions and then multiply as with fractions. Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Multiply a Fraction and a Mixed Number
Example. 1 Find ¼ x 3 ¾ ¼ x 4 ¾ = ¼ x 19/4 = 1 x 19 4 x 4 = 19 = 1 3/16 16 Write 4 ¾ as 19/4 Simplify Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Another Example Find 1/3 x 6 4/7 1/3 x 6 4/7 = 1/3 x 46/7 = 1 x 46 3 x 7 = 46 = 2 4/21 21 Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Now Your Turn Multiply. Write in simplest form. ½ x 2 1/3 = 7/6 = 1 1/6 2/3 x 1 1/3 = 8/9 3/5 x 2 ¼ = 27/20 = 1 7/20 4/11 x 2 ¾ = 4/3 = 1 1/3 ¾ x 3 ¼ = 39/16 = 2 5/16 Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

MULTIPLYING MIXED NUMBERS
To multiply mixed numbers, convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions and multiply the numerator and denominator. Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Example – 1 Find 3 ½ x 1 1/5 3 ½ x 1 1/5 = 7 x 6 = 7 x 6 2 x 5 = 21 = 4 1 Write mixed numbers as improper fractions 3 Multiply the numerator and denominator 1 Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Example – 2 Find 2 ½ x 2 ¾ 2 ½ x 2 ¾ = 5 x 11 = 5 x 11 2 x 4 = 55 = 6 7 Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Now Your Turn Simplify 2 ¼ x 1 1/9 = 2 ½ 2 8/13 x 3 ¼ = 8 ½ 3 2/11 x 5 2/15= 16 1/3 2 3/7 x 4 2/3 = 11 1/3 1 4/5 x 1 ½ = 20 7/10 Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Practice Multiply: 9/10 x 7 2/3 = 6 9/10 10 2/3 x 8 ¼ = 88 2/3 x 2 ½ = 5/3 = 1 2/3 1 2/5 x 1 ¾ = 49/20 = 2 9/20 3/8 x 3 ¾ = 45/32 = 1 13/32 3/5 x 1 ½ = 9/10 4 4/5 x 2 7/10 = 12 24/25 Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Word Problems The length of a rectangle is 3 4/5 feet long and breadth is 2 ¾ feet wide. Find the area of the rectangle? Area = length x breadth = 3 4/5 x 2 ¾ = 1 9/20 ft 2 Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Let’s try this one Find the area of the parallelogram if the formula for finding the area = breadth x height ; breadth = 5 3/5 m; height = 8 4/5 Area = 5 3/5 x 8 4/5 = 49 7/25 m2 Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc

Review To multiply fractions and mixed numbers, convert the mixed number into improper fraction and multiply. To multiply the mixed fractions, convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions and multiply the numerators and denominators. Then simplify the fractions. Copyright © Ed2NetLearning.Inc
